I thought Id'd bung up my experience so far, at 4,000 miles on my 14 plate 1190R bought last September. Just the facts and you can draw your own conclusions..............
The miles have included one longish dash to Paris and back with the rest of the miles mostly Derbyshire back roads and several M-Way hauls through the middle of the winter in some very shitty weather.
Bling fitted:
Wings shorty exhaust - lovely quality, nice sound (not tooooo loud) and IMO looks great on the bike. Washers on the heat shield have rusted, to be replaced with stainless.
Wings heat deflecting panels (matte finish) - good quality and look like they are meant to be there but have to admit I prefer the more open look without them. I've never got a hot arse/thigh but always felt it through my boots on my calf. Panels alone made little difference but combined with the supplied heat reflecting blanket they work very well and I'm only aware (slightly) of any heat when in proper stop/go traffic in very warm weather. Very pleased with the job they do. R/H panel needs to be removed to adjust the damping screw.
KTM damped risers - Raised the bars almost enough to be spot on, maybe need another 1/2" to be perfect. They also kill the vibes a bit but having said that I never found the vibes an issue.
R&G Rad guard - unobtrusive, easy to fit and looks like it'll do the job.
SW Motech camel foot - Looks the part, does the job and makes the rather upright side stand a bit more sure footed.
SW Motech GPS mount - well made, fits well and mounts my 660 in the perfect position.
Pivot Pegz - Very sure footed and have made the fact I couldn't quite get the gear lever position spot on irrelevant due to the fact they pivot - I rate them very highly.
Pillion peg lowering brackets - These bring the pegs forward and down and have made the pillion position comfy for Amanda who was struggling until fitting them. If I ride right on the balls of my feet my heels sometimes catch them but worth it for the improvement they have made for Amanda.
PIAA bulbs - Good enough lights are now very bright lights. More than adequete now and no further upgrade needed.
KTM Bread bin luggage - looks ok(ish) IMO and I like the way it easily clips on and off the bike. Reasonable size but because of the large entry lip it's a bit of a pain forcing in the KTM bags if they are very full. The locks/catches are a bit hit and miss and there is a knack to getting them to open/close. Dry lock lubricant has helped a lot but still not perfect. 100% waterproof so far. Not as good as BWM Varios though which I rate as pretty much as good as hard luggage gets IMO.
KTM tank bag - not bespoke bit fits well enough. Straps for fitting are not as neat as the GS fitting but the bag itself is good; expandable and with separate pockets. Shame it needs the supplied shower cap to keep it waterproof.
Touring Screen (Powerbronze prototype?) - was good for winter M-Way work but, IMO, looks shite. Back to the small 'R' screen now and having used it on the Paris 'dash' in the raised position it worked fine as long as I ducked my head down 1 or 2" inches so not fantastic but I'm ok with it and the looks outweigh it's outright lack of practicality IMO.
Touratech headlight guard - Looks the part IMO, easy to fit and looks like it will do the job, what more can I say?
DNA air filter - Detailed elsewhere here but fitted, along with an RTV gasket to the air box, in the hope that it will prevent anything getting past the filter. It's freer flowing than standard and along with the can has meant that I carried out the following............
Hilltop remap - Lean running cured, more power and smoother fuelling (which was very good to start with) mean this is a mod I'm extremely pleased with. Again, detailed elsewhere.
Suspension set up by K Tech - I'd not managed to get the suspension where I wanted it; compliant yet firm, so spent a couple of hours with these guys setting it up. The bike now soaks up bumps (but not quite as smooth as my Wilber'd GS) but tracks and handles beautifully at speed. Not a lot of money for a ride that I can't really now fault. Settings are in the Suspension thread if anybody wants to try them.
.....I think that's all and TBH I can't think of anything else now that I'd want to do to the bike, it's now pretty spot on for me
Issues:
Horn stopped working - Horn wire snapped 'cos it looked too short and was being stretched. Temporary repair by me, new loom section fitted by dealer.
Rough running - stick coil/plug cap loose on front pot. Diagnosed and sorted by dealer.
Oil leak on rear head - loose breather, now sorted.
Suspected warped front disks - weren't warped, traced to a sticking bobbin. Now cleaned and all ok.
Petrol fumes in traffic - an intermittent problem but not nice when it happens. Wondered if the Wings blanket was heating the tank and pressurising it but having removed the blanket it's still happened. Likewise it's not happened in hot city traffic with the blanket. This was an issue with some 13 bikes but mine has the later modified fuel cap. Dealer has pushed it back to KTM and are awaiting an answer.
Starter slow when cold - it's never not started but can be sluggish when left outside below freezing. New map loaded by dealer made no difference so a 1290 starter motor is on order, to be fitted by dealer.
One off loss of coolant (300ml) - never happened again and no signs of where it went.
It's also worth mentioning that after a winter of regular use commuting etc there is no sign of corrosion other than light surface rust on the disc bobbins which polished out. It was treated with some wax stuff (Dynax UC) during the worst of the winter and removed a few weeks ago. The chain has been adjusted three times, twice when it was settling down and once again 600 miles ago. It just gets a spray of chain lube once a week(ish).
So there we have it. I'm still in love with this bike and the more miles I put on it the better it gets. I can honestly say it's the best bike I've so far had the pleasure of owning. Whilst not maybe as much an all rounder as the GS it is so much more focused (in a good way) in most areas that I can live with the few areas where it's not quite as good.
Oh, and have I ever mentioned what a stonker of an engine it has?
Andres
PS I should also give a big thumbs up for Leisure Trail (my dealer) who have been nothing but good to deal with
