tell me about your 1190

Norfolk, those are awesome where can I get a set?

Fitted my Wings short can today. Couldn't resist firing the bike up when the original can was off and before the new can went on. Holy shit, I nearly crapped myself when the wall of noise hit me. Guess I shouldn't have tried it while inside the garage!

I thought Id'd bung up my experience so far, at 4,000 miles on my 14 plate 1190R bought last September. Just the facts and you can draw your own conclusions..............

The miles have included one longish dash to Paris and back with the rest of the miles mostly Derbyshire back roads and several M-Way hauls through the middle of the winter in some very shitty weather.

Bling fitted:

Wings shorty exhaust - lovely quality, nice sound (not tooooo loud) and IMO looks great on the bike. Washers on the heat shield have rusted, to be replaced with stainless.

Wings heat deflecting panels (matte finish) - good quality and look like they are meant to be there but have to admit I prefer the more open look without them. I've never got a hot arse/thigh but always felt it through my boots on my calf. Panels alone made little difference but combined with the supplied heat reflecting blanket they work very well and I'm only aware (slightly) of any heat when in proper stop/go traffic in very warm weather. Very pleased with the job they do. R/H panel needs to be removed to adjust the damping screw.

KTM damped risers - Raised the bars almost enough to be spot on, maybe need another 1/2" to be perfect. They also kill the vibes a bit but having said that I never found the vibes an issue.

R&G Rad guard - unobtrusive, easy to fit and looks like it'll do the job.

SW Motech camel foot - Looks the part, does the job and makes the rather upright side stand a bit more sure footed.

SW Motech GPS mount - well made, fits well and mounts my 660 in the perfect position.

Pivot Pegz - Very sure footed and have made the fact I couldn't quite get the gear lever position spot on irrelevant due to the fact they pivot - I rate them very highly.

Pillion peg lowering brackets - These bring the pegs forward and down and have made the pillion position comfy for Amanda who was struggling until fitting them. If I ride right on the balls of my feet my heels sometimes catch them but worth it for the improvement they have made for Amanda.

PIAA bulbs - Good enough lights are now very bright lights. More than adequete now and no further upgrade needed.

KTM Bread bin luggage - looks ok(ish) IMO and I like the way it easily clips on and off the bike. Reasonable size but because of the large entry lip it's a bit of a pain forcing in the KTM bags if they are very full. The locks/catches are a bit hit and miss and there is a knack to getting them to open/close. Dry lock lubricant has helped a lot but still not perfect. 100% waterproof so far. Not as good as BWM Varios though which I rate as pretty much as good as hard luggage gets IMO.

KTM tank bag - not bespoke bit fits well enough. Straps for fitting are not as neat as the GS fitting but the bag itself is good; expandable and with separate pockets. Shame it needs the supplied shower cap to keep it waterproof.

Touring Screen (Powerbronze prototype?) - was good for winter M-Way work but, IMO, looks shite. Back to the small 'R' screen now and having used it on the Paris 'dash' in the raised position it worked fine as long as I ducked my head down 1 or 2" inches so not fantastic but I'm ok with it and the looks outweigh it's outright lack of practicality IMO.

Touratech headlight guard - Looks the part IMO, easy to fit and looks like it will do the job, what more can I say?

DNA air filter - Detailed elsewhere here but fitted, along with an RTV gasket to the air box, in the hope that it will prevent anything getting past the filter. It's freer flowing than standard and along with the can has meant that I carried out the following............

Hilltop remap - Lean running cured, more power and smoother fuelling (which was very good to start with) mean this is a mod I'm extremely pleased with. Again, detailed elsewhere.

Suspension set up by K Tech - I'd not managed to get the suspension where I wanted it; compliant yet firm, so spent a couple of hours with these guys setting it up. The bike now soaks up bumps (but not quite as smooth as my Wilber'd GS) but tracks and handles beautifully at speed. Not a lot of money for a ride that I can't really now fault. Settings are in the Suspension thread if anybody wants to try them.

.....I think that's all and TBH I can't think of anything else now that I'd want to do to the bike, it's now pretty spot on for me :)

Issues:

Horn stopped working - Horn wire snapped 'cos it looked too short and was being stretched. Temporary repair by me, new loom section fitted by dealer.

Rough running - stick coil/plug cap loose on front pot. Diagnosed and sorted by dealer.

Oil leak on rear head - loose breather, now sorted.

Suspected warped front disks - weren't warped, traced to a sticking bobbin. Now cleaned and all ok.

Petrol fumes in traffic - an intermittent problem but not nice when it happens. Wondered if the Wings blanket was heating the tank and pressurising it but having removed the blanket it's still happened. Likewise it's not happened in hot city traffic with the blanket. This was an issue with some 13 bikes but mine has the later modified fuel cap. Dealer has pushed it back to KTM and are awaiting an answer.

Starter slow when cold - it's never not started but can be sluggish when left outside below freezing. New map loaded by dealer made no difference so a 1290 starter motor is on order, to be fitted by dealer.

One off loss of coolant (300ml) - never happened again and no signs of where it went.

It's also worth mentioning that after a winter of regular use commuting etc there is no sign of corrosion other than light surface rust on the disc bobbins which polished out. It was treated with some wax stuff (Dynax UC) during the worst of the winter and removed a few weeks ago. The chain has been adjusted three times, twice when it was settling down and once again 600 miles ago. It just gets a spray of chain lube once a week(ish).

So there we have it. I'm still in love with this bike and the more miles I put on it the better it gets. I can honestly say it's the best bike I've so far had the pleasure of owning. Whilst not maybe as much an all rounder as the GS it is so much more focused (in a good way) in most areas that I can live with the few areas where it's not quite as good.

Oh, and have I ever mentioned what a stonker of an engine it has? :green gri

Andres

PS I should also give a big thumbs up for Leisure Trail (my dealer) who have been nothing but good to deal with :)

Oh, and should have added - shit wet weather = more crap thrown up over the back of the bike and pillion than any bike I have owned before. Fortunately none of it reaches me, just Amanda :D

good idea andres.

KTM tank bag - never used the shower cap and it's not leaked so far.

KTM Power Parts ali topbox - good size, looks nice. leaks copiously. probably from the quick release mechanism at the bottom. still like it though. currently sporting Humvee Graphics prototype orange/black chevrons, which i rather like.

loss of of coolant - but not that much. seems it's attributable to air trapped in the system at the factory or dealers when first filled.

UNI air filter + gasket - does the job AFAIK. i do have a PP DNA filter that i'm planning to fit before it goes in for service soon, as it's a KTM part and warrantee friendly. i'll be leaving the UNI gasket on though.

Scottoiler - good idea in principal, but a bit hit and miss in practice. generally does a really good job in the dry, but in the wet it's a different story. even turned up enough to chuck oil everywhere, my chain is rusty next morning, so i used a spray. maintenance free? my fecking arse! on balance - probably better than not having one.

R&G rad guard - can't see it mostly, but maybe it will be useful? probably a good precaution.

Wings shorty pipe - lovely bit of kit. sounds great. looks great. not too load. more importantly, not too quiet. no CE approval, so potentially an issue in places that care. switzerland, austria , i'm looking at you.

AndyStrapz Throwover panniers and mini frames - best of a pretty poor bunch of luggage options for the bike IMO. mad money to import from aus.

Standard headlight bulbs - work well enough. not saying much, but better than a 1200GS anyway.

no heat shields or heat issues, though heat can be noticeable. no leaks, misfires, poor running, bits fallen off. probably shouldn't have said any of that :)

andres, was it much grief getting a 1290 starter out of KTM? mines a bit sluggish when cold, but has always started. it was touch and go one time though.

I played it (purposfuly) 'slowly, slowly'...............

Mentioned it at first service but said leave it and I'd see how it goes.

When it went back in for the rough running I mentioned it again and they said there was a new map available and they'd try that.

Back in again this week for the oil leak and mentioned the map had made no difference and they said there and then they would order the starter motor.

i'm going to mention it at the next service. see how it goes.

fortunately, i haven't had to visit the workshop since my first service.

That's a well thought out and helpful summary Andres :thumb2 it's a pity we don't get the same from Kent just lots of man love with someone called Cato :ymca2 :D

Look .... FFS .... I haven't got time right now ... I've just finished a ten hour shift and I'm having a pint .... !!

Looks like a poxy Kent rah rah rah pub.

Bloody flower in a pot on the table and every starter comes with a poxy gay dressing. And that pint looks suspiciously like a glass of rosé that you've pissed in.

You've not sold Cato and bought a Hardly, have you ?

Hic .... Home, and it's now far too late to put pen to paper on Cato's development, but I will do soon.

Is that a gauntlet you've just thrown down Nutty .... :comfort

'Cos Cato's going to whup your sorry ass .... :D

(If I can avoid crashing it this weekend in Wales ... )
