I've been umming and arring about what, if any after market filter to go with; my understanding of the main systems is as follows:

Rotweiller - Would seem to do the job plus there's a reasonable power gain but very expensive. Includes substantial looking moulding sections. If I fitted this as well as a pipe I think I'd only be happy if I then also had a remap as I'd be worried about running lean which means more expense.

Unifilter - Very good reports on it's effectiveness and a reasonable price. Includes a gasket that should help seal the air box. Some questions over small power and torque losses which seem greater if intake socks are fitted.

DNA - Not loads of info but what there is seems positive, it's the cheapest option but still not what I call cheap (£80ish with a service kit). Modest power increase claimed. Noting included to help seal the air box.

So, I took the plunge last night and ordered a DNA filter.

The filter itself should, I hope, seal perfectly within the the air box. The substantial moulding arount the element itself should prevent it from flexing and allowing anything past the edges of the filter, something that the KTM filter may be prone to doing?

That just leaves the air box. After reading THIS thread on AdvRider I've decided to make a RTV gasket and seal the lid that way. It looks to me like it ought to work but the proof will be to see what the air box looks like after a few thousand miles...................

Edit: I've yet to open the airbox up and will be interested to see what it's looking like after (only) a thousand miles. I'll do a little write up on it all when I get the filter and fit it.
 
when i bought the UNI, it was the only one that i could get any first hand info on. many people have fitted it and and it seemed to do the job just fine. i now think if the DNA filter may be the better bet, but i don't think there's much in it. i may switch one day, but it's hard to see a compelling reason to do so. i'd also go with the RTV gasket.

did you check out the Powercell filter? a bit like the rottweiler, but cheaper and no remap.

btw. i think hilltop will remap an 1190 :augie
 
i took some pics as i went when i did mine, if that would help when you do yours? shows all the screws etc.

Yeah, I agree with all of that and TBH if I'd fitted a Unifilter I wouldn't be bothered about changing it. Re the Powercell, no, that's one I missed.......

Hilltop are just down the road from me :green gri Whilst it's tempting (from a tinkering/boy's toys point of view) I'm certainly not after more power and the fueling/throttle response is nigh on perfect so unless the filter and eventual Wings pipe changes things I'll save the money........

Thanks for all the updates. So far I've taken the view that the OEM air filter should work at filtering the air effectively, and if it doesn't it's K+TM's problem, not mine - so I'd be really interested to see what the inside of those air boxes looks like. If it really does need an aftermarket filter to prevent engine damage, I'll be asking my dealer for one at his cost, I think.

Geoff is away till next Monday, so I said I'd call back then.
Having put the GS back to standard, and being astonished at how flat it felt after 18 months of remapped full system, it's definitely on the agenda! Yes, there's enough power there, but the crisp crisp fuelling it gave the gs is just worth every penny.
De cat first though ....
Maybe he'll do a deal if we all pitch up .. !!

Did you have the original map put back or was it just the original can and headers refitted? I have decat headers,can and Geoff has worked his magic on my TC and I wondered when it comes time to sell what effect the hilltop map has to the original set up when it goes back to standard.

i've always been a bit wary of remaps, but you never know...

Maybe, or maybe you can be the guinea pig ;)

Seriously though, once I have the Wings silencer fitted I'll maybe looking into decating the pipe as well - if I do that I will want to look into a new map. Prob won't be until well into next year though as funds are tight at the moment.

Whilst the remap makes the fuelling a delight, it also protects the motor. For the Ktm (which as you say fuels pretty well and goes like stink), I'd still do it to protect it ..
NT ... I didn't change the map when I put it all back. Ran fine ....

What does a remap protect the motor from, unless you've fitted a straight through pipe?

I don't doubt it makes it feel better, but that's not why I avoided remaps. Mainly can't be arsed with the insurance co. Aggro.
 
Yes ... I'll only do it if I de- catt it (which I'll probably do).
There are some bikes that have a really annoying glitch in the throttle - some of the early 990's were reputed to have that and many riders napped it to dial that out.
Fuelling is good on this as you say, but de-cat it and it'll run seriously lean ...
