tell me about your 1190

That's terrible !!!! In off road mode on tkc's the bike feels 'orrible on the road, and that's with 25psi !
You should be ashamed !!! :)

I took mine around the Essex and Herts lanes today on a set of part worn tkc's

It was fairly dry despite the rain yesterday.

I was on the off road setting for both the mapping and abs. I hadn't realised how de tuned the off-road setting was until I turned it off on the way home.

Tho according to bumble who followed me on a gs remarked on how I was spinning up all the time.

Brilliant bike.

I've only used the off road modes. Half of me says 'switch off the traction and abs, and stick it on full power', and the other half of me says, 'don't be a twat, you'll end up wrapping it round a tree' :D

I'm sort of in two minds. I'm the first to lecture others on throttle control and that 'it's all in yer right hand' .. but .... there's a lot of power there if it does suddenly decide to get out of shape.

I do like the split ABS. My by ways are reasonably busy with other users and its very reassuring that I can do a full on emergency stop and not lock the front. (I've deliberately tried as an experiment, and it's excellent at a full on emergency stop .. ).

New tyres on my AdvR today after 6000 miles. Still a little tread left, but close, if not at the legal limit. The dealership gave me a new centre stand as well (apparently the original version is prone to snapping - news to me!) and updated my fuel map. Not sure if it's my imagination, but the bike felt a little flat on the ride home. Need to reassess on the next outing.

Also treated myself to a very expensive pair of waterproof trousers as my old waterproofs weren't and my bollox got wet within a mile of leaving the house.

What was wrong with the 1190 that they had to make the 1290 ?

I tried the 1290 the other day and couldn't fathom it ?

Any ideas ?

Arms race with Ducati / BMW?

Yeah, almost certainly but I guess also it gives a clear point of difference from the 1190's for what is their 'flagship' adventure/touring/whateveryouwanttocallit model.

And that marketing works for me; I can feel superior that I have the 'hard core, real deal, R model and am not associated with the 'touring' bike and the guys and gals that buy the 1290 wil mostly be happy that they have the flagship model that's a cut above the rest of the KTM range. KTM are happy 'cos they have a broader customer offer and sell more bikes.

Everyone's a winner :D

Indeed. One man's meat and all that. (sorry Andres).

I think KTM know what they're doing with the 1290.

Probably not the best way of doing things, but I've just read this thread from start to finish.

No, not the start to finish, that's obviously the "normal" way of reading threads.

I mean AFTER taking a ride up to Teasdales in Thirsk this morning after I finished work, and trading my 58plate GSA in for a 15 plate R. :D

Mixed feelings riding the GSA back home, as almost 7 years is the longest I have ever owned a bike by a factor of 5, and I will miss it. But onwards, and from the read of it, upwards. It was time for that new bike feeling. :bounce1

In all seriousness, isn't there a good deal more weather protection on the 1290, making it a better all day, distance ride?

The lack of weather protection, compared to my 12GSA is one of the, very few, things putting me of the 1190r as a replacement. I got caught out in the rain the other day and my legs stayed pretty dry for quite some time... would that be the case on the 1190r?

My worst day ever was last year in France. 290 miles in rain like I've never experienced before, fog, lightning, flash flood.....I got wet (on the outside). :D. I guess I just accept that I'm on a motorbike and getting wet comes with the territory. I actually found my legs and feet were worse off on my 12GS as the water seemed to run over the cylinders like a river and soak me from my knees down.

Not to mention all the spray coming off the back wheel on the gs/a

Sweet :) I had my GS for 10 years (from new); no regrets over the change, no,no,no, not one little regret :thumb2

I don't know how good the GSA is in that respect but reckon it would be better than the R. TBH I've always had naked bikes or big trailies so the R is what I've always been used to and I have no problem with that.............however............the amount of shit chucked out the back is horrendous as has been the state of the back of Amanda's jacket when we've been in crap weather.

protection on the 1190S is not nearly as good as the hexhead or LC GSA.

protection on the 1290SA is more or less on a par with the GSA IMO.

i've fitted the 1290 screen on my 1190 and there is a noticeable improvement over the optional 1190 "touring" screen from KTM. i will, at some point, fit the 1290 mask and remaining bits, but it does mean stripping down all the plastics on the front end.

Has Giles killed Cato he's been very quiet lately :nenau it's not the same without his updates on his new love affair :D

Ohhhh Lordy Lordy ....

I am a little richer, but fucking exhausted!!

For the last three weeks or so, Stack has been on/off/on/off .... but mostly on .... on my rest days! So I've spanked the overtime whilst I can - overdraft to claw back, bike trip to Corsica in 5 weeks, etc etc. The net result is that I've just been at work non stop recently - long days and then sleep!

Cato is very well! Infact, I take him to work when stack is on, otherwise I have to suffer the diversion route in my car on the way home. Still a brilliant bike! Gave it a proper cobweb blow a few days ago and remember thinking to myself as I rode ... 'Feck me this is a good bike..!', it is still incredibly involving, has just the lightest of throttle (I remember thinking that at the time - throttle made of candy-floss! - probably down to Geoff, decat and end can ..) and acceleration that's good enough for me!

Yep ... still alive and kicking .... :thumb (with new Tank decal .... !!)

He lives :comfort I was beginning to the you'd ditched Cato and succumbed to the temptations of the Harley section :ymca I guess it's only a matter of time :D
