Templar castles Spain and Portugal

Sao Jorge Castle

São Jorge Castle, (Saint George's Castle) in Lisbon is worth a visit if you're down that way. It's interesting because it was the last place on the Iberian Peninsula the Moors occupied before they were defeated by the Crusaders.

I think the Templars outdo the Timpsons looking at that lot (y)

Dont know if these are Templar do dars but.
Olite castilla Se of Butgos was a great 2hr walkabout inside and out.
Also Coca castilla ner Valadololid. Maybe best brick castle Ive seen. Hthy
Same sort of area as the ones above, but Penafiel always impresses me.

Off topic, but have you been to Malbork castle, another brick built one that is massive?

Loads of them just North of Malaga. Teba Castle and Sir James Douglas from Lanarkshire is a good story.

What remains of Douglas Castle in Douglas Lanarkshire

Quite the Journey in 1330 I'd imagine (y)

The Templar connection up here is that Bruce had close links with them and offered them sanctuary. As opposed to the slaughter going on furth of Scotland. Hence, there are lots of places names including "Temple" or "Templelands" which have disappeared in rUK.

It may be that Bruce was concerned for his future in purgatory as he'd failed to go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land and certainly had lots to worry about. He'd murdered the Red Comyn in a church after all and slaughtered any Comyn/Balliol/ Edward II supporters who got in his way!

Hence his mate taking his heart to Jerusalem and the diversion to Teba en route.

I think, well me an google, ots the biggest castle in the world.

Would love a gander at that but never thought of Poland as a trip.
Maybe about time for a change eh..

If anywhere near your route Tomar, Portugal is worth a visit

It was pure happenstance that we found the connection as we hired the bikes in Teba. Its strange that the town has a Sir James Douglas Festival every year but the story is apparently not well known in Douglas Lanarkshire. We went looking for the Castle in 2021 and stopped in Douglas for a bite of lunch. I got talking with the Cafe owner who was also a local Councillor and he was saying that he had been trying to get some sort of a monument commemorating the connection for some years. The castle in Teba has an interesting museum and one of the exhibits is a relief model of the Christian and Muslim (Moorish) castles in the vicinity and how they changed "ownership" over time. Very interesting place Andalusia inland from the coast (And much less expensive as well).

Indeed it is, it was the Capital of Portugal when the Templars were doing the Kings work...You would need a couple of days to see everything though...I am only 95km from Tomar.
There is a lot of Templar history in Portugal

One of the most emblematic points on the Templar Route is the city of Tomar, located in central Portugal. It was there that the Knights Templar found their definitive home after the order's dissolution in 1312.

Covent of Christ-
it's in the list - quite an extraordinary place and is one not to miss.
If you happen to drive/ride in southern France, visit Rocamadour- and you'll find a Black Madonna there- History is fascinating-
@Berin have you downloaded the latest file I put up ?(post 26)

This is the icon.
It must be placed in the Custom icon symbols folder in both BC and the Garmin
This site does not allow for a .bmp file to be uploaded so you'll need to open the file and save it as a 16 colour bitmap
Its size needs be 24x24 pixels
Bit depth = 24
Horizontal and vertical dpi needs be 240 else Garmins may have a wobbler...**
(AFAIK lowest can be 22x22)
** it can still go wrong if you use BC to transfer file to/from unit.
Another way is to save the .gpx file AND the bitmap file with the same name as the .gpx file and use POI loader to send it to the unit

*** be aware that using POI loader WILL delete previous ones in your garmin satnav... don't say I didn't give a heads up!
Hi Yarkto, I've put that icon file into the Basecamp custom icons folder:

To add the icon, I open the waypoint in Basecamp, then change symbol:

The Maltese cross that I placed in the custom icon folder isn't there - any ideas?

Yes- You have renamed the icon- for both BC and Garmins, the custom icons names MUST be:
001.bmp
002.bmp
003.bmp
and so on up to the maximum which I think is around 40 ish for those kept in BC and the Garmins' Custom icon symbols folder.

However
If you wish to save memory in your unit, you can send a whole bunch of .gpx files to the Garmin via POI loader
Remembering that:
1- doing so WILL erase previously loaded ones
2- IF you wish the specific .gpx file - for example- Templars.gpx AND wish the icon to be seen in the Garmin, then you must rename the icon to the same name as the .gpx file ie:
Templars.gpx and Templars.bmp
BOTH these files need be in a single folder which is the one where you can put whole bunch of other ones BEFORE using POI loader.
This ONLY applies to POI loader- It is useful if the .gpx file contains all the same category for example campsites all needing a tent icon- pointless otherwise.

By using POI loader you save unit space as the waypoints do not count towards the units maximum waypoints.
BUT the downside to this method is that you will not be able to move/rename/delete/fiddle with any waypoint loaded to the unit that way.

You can have the Templar.bmp now called anything from 001.bmp to 045.bmp in custom pois in the unit as well.

I hope that's useful

p.s IF you opened my file BEFORE adding the custom icons to BC and the unit- they will be changed to a default one such as your blue flags- reason is that neither recognise the icon

IMPORTANT- else it won't work!
  1. Save the images in the correct location:
    • Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 10 users - C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\My Garmin\Custom Waypoint Symbols\
    • Mac users - Macintosh HD/Users/%USERNAME%/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Custom Waypoint Symbols/
      • If you do not see the Library option, it may be hidden. Press Command + Shift + . (period) to view the Library.

Thanks for that.
I will try again, just to assign the icons in Basecamp first. I’d rather not use POI loader as I have a few waypoints in the Zumo already that I would like to keep

just connect your zumo to BC and import - you will then have your waypoints safe.
BTW POI loader creates a .gpi file and that one (if it exists) is the one which will be replaced.
Waypoints which you have manually saved in your zumo are not affected.
As with anything, back up/ make copies before making changes especially when it is your first foray into these things.

Just reporting back and thanks once again to Yarkto.

I split the POI file into Spain and Portugal, since we're only going to Spain this trip, put the icon into Basecamp as described above, and all the Templar locations show with Yarkto's nice Maltese cross in Basecamp.

I then loaded the POI's into the Zumo, where they also show with the cross.

Now to see how this works with MRA!

If anyone fancies staying in a Templar themed hotel, this is worth a look. The host goes out of his way to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable, and can arrange secure parking.

Nice little town with some decent restaurants too.

Did you get to the end Richard?

I managed about 75% before I gave up. Like swimming in porridge…
I read this recently. It's certainly a bit pedantic and focuses on the crusades in the Holy Land rather than Spain. Saying that, it's a revelation to learn just how quickly the organisation rose from nothing to become a huge force in Europe and almost a prototype for the international banking system that developed later. Which is what made them such a juicy target of course.

Then there's the incompetence of temporal leaders, the divisions in the Muslim world and the utter slaughter of battles like Hattin.

Much like today in fact!

Nowt wrong with porridge by the way! :D
