If you need the extra power. However, as a general rule the last production run of any car or motorcycle tends to be both well sorted, & often loaded with "goodies" to clear the stock before the new model.

That is true - I bought one of the first R1100RS's back in 1993 and although pleasant to ride, these things were EXTREMELY fragile and clearly ridicously underdeveloped. I worked in northerm Germany at the time and typically cruising at 100 - 110 mph (as one does on a bike like that in Germany) and clearly the bike couldn't cope with that. After the 3rd gear box, drive (locked up, nearly killed me) and second engine BMW offered to buy it back from me provided I woud get the then new R1100RT. That bike was already a lot better, "only" needing one gear-box replacement and fewer oiled-up clutches, but I lost my joy in riding and sold that soon after. The experience put me off of BMW for 12 years (and I had been a happy BMW-chappy for 18 years).

I just bought me a 1200RT and it's good to be "home" again. I trust them more because the ones we use in the bloodbike service are keeping up well (unlike the 1150RTs we ran in the past). Fingers crossed ;)

I like the idea of the "assisiting" liquid cooling, allowing the "rotation" of the cylinder-heads but I will leave the test-piloting of the early "prototypes" to other brave buyers this time round :)
