Evening all. Long story short one of my friends had a off on the 1250 a few weeks ago and buggered his TFT screen. I've purchased a second hand TFT which is in great condition and fitted it.
All functions seem to work through the wheel on the left handlebar but..... The mode and heated grip button doesn't seem to do anything and the total milage odometer is in the colour Red!
I put the bike on the GS 911 and it recognizes that its a different TFT! Do you think ill have to take it to BMW to get unlocked??
Any advice welcome :thumby:

On my previous non-tft GSA, the mileage data was held in the instrument cluster memory so you couldn’t just fit any old cluster to any old bike, it was a dealer job to code them.

So you’re saying , that if you purchase an Alibaba alternative , it will have no mileage data ?

No idea, I’ve never tried to fit one.

I removed the cluster on my Hex GSA once to route wiring or something, and didn’t fully reseat its data plug between the cluster and ZFE, the bike was not happy and the mileage went weird until I located the issue and fully seated the connector in the rear of the cluster.

This makes sense as the ZFE and cluster share the mileage data to prevent unscrupulous people from easily clocking a used bike with a younger or lower mileage cluster unit.

The mileage is recorded in the screen and the ecu. If there is any discrepancy between the 2 readings it will throw a wobbly. It then needs to go on ISTA to re sync ( usually to which ever reading is highest ). Most aftermarket dash’s ( Koso etc ) will automatically pick up the mileage from the ecu but if you refit the original dash later on it needs to go on ISTA to re sync the dash to the higher mileage recorded in the Ecu. Gs911 etc won’t be able to do this.

I guess that’s a good security feature?

I should have added earlier, when I had the loose connector on my Hexhead cluster, the mileage shown had jumped up massively which made me crap myself that either I had bought a “ringer” that I had somehow accidentally unclocked, or that I had now permanently added tens of thousands of miles and crashed the bikes resale value. Luckily reseating the connector properly put everything back to normal.

May I ask where you got second hand TFT from as guess what I have buggered mine as well.

OK I have found a used TFT screen from a bike the same year as mine. It has a higher mileage but will I have any other problems than just getting BMW to set it up or can I get my local garage to do it with a 911 ?

Hi pal, you'll have to take it to BMW (My friend used Preston Bowker) there they will sync the tft to your bike...plus your mileage is recorded to your ecu so your original milage will come back once tuned... Off memory they charged him about £150 for the pleasure, hope this helps Andy

Thanks but went with sending the original away to Bulgaria. It's at the moment on its way home. I will let you all know how it went but cost 290 € so cheaper than buying one from eBay and should be fine for the bike. Fingers crossed.

Very fingers crossed,
The kombi is part of the can bus system and for security and anti tampering/ clocking, purposes part of that security system, is to store the original kombi values in other modules on the bus. Your red display and not working functions are to show there is a mismatch in the stored data

Unless you can provide data to show the replacement kombi was legitimately purchaed
I doubt the dealer would do any other than remarry the kombi, best case the higher of any milages stored would become the new baseline

So old kombi 10000 miles. Sh kombi 50000 miles. The bike will use the 500000 miles as the new mileage

Because you could be trying to do

Original kombi. 50000 miles new kombi 20000

So your bike has lost 30000 miles

Hmm

I am not sure you understood me. I sent my original TFT to Bulgaria. They have fitted a new glass and it all seems to work fine. All will be revealed when it arrives back on the bike.

Anyone ever asked themselves where the stolen UK TFTs go?

Take a ride around Albania and Lithuania. A lot of the cars still have their UK plates on them. And aren't being driven by Brits !

Most the parts you want/need on Ebay are listed in Lithuania. It's the place you go to buy back your stolen parts.

And to answer the OP... The TFT is a control unit. It needs to be programmed in as a module replacement. Mileage is stored in the clocks (kombi) and also the ECU (DME). The red lettering shows conflict.

OK so the original came back from Race technika in Bulgaria. Unit looked as good as new and went straight back into the bike. I have now been running it for over a month and everything works as the old one did. Dimitria, the owners name, kept in constant touch with me and sent the unit back less than a week after receiving it. Included in the cost, 290 € , he paid for the courier to return it . Absolutely first class service and would recommend to anyone.

Could you forward me his details please.

This could be a service I could recommend to my customers.

Cheers
