Then starte in d the process of torquing the head, which is a 2 day job.

Down to 25 foot pounds, then 30. Leave overnight for the head gasket to compress a bit, and torque again to 30.

That’s not anal, that’s doing it right.

Anal is making all the bolt head flats on the gearbox casing line up.

I like to torque, fire up, cool down, torque again, then again next service.

A tool like this makes lining up the rocker, shims and springs to insert the shaft a lot easier.

That would have come in handy Cookie.

A bit more progress, fitted the Silent Hektik pickup and rotor.

2 degrees before TDC, line up the leg with the dot.

Simple as that.

Next job is to retorque the heads, then fit the pushrods and rocker gear.

Then adjust valve clearances and button it up, that’s one side done.

But don’t think I’m going to need this very soon.

I’ll have to organise an airhead social when it’s finished so we can admire.
And I can get a little bimble:D

Thanks Mike you’re not wrong, it’s all at my pace now. Wheels get tyres fitted tomorrow, then the frame goes on at the weekend.

Good plan on a meet. I’m hoping to do the DGR on 27th Sept in London. Feels a bit ambitious just now but let’s see.

Alternatively I’m sure Wapping can recommend a route and a sound biker mates cafe.

I swung past Russ Tyres in Portsmouth this avo, Russ did a great job of fitting the rubber. The first time these rims have had tyres on them in many years.

A few more bits on tonight: lower frame rails, starter, carbs, breather ...

Frame on at the weekend. Tank and panels are now in primer with colour going on next week.

I’m sure that you already know this Nin, but you are doing a fabulous job. Those spoked Tonti wheels are really lovely, the speed of your work is amazing.

I eagerly look forward to each instalment, thanks for sharing your progress.

Isn't it? Absolutely beautiful.

What they said! You’ve turned it into a work of art.

Thanks for your kind words fellas, it means a lot.

I'm very lucky with this build, everything so far has been in good condition. Mike has done a fantastic job on the finishing and parts of engineering I can't (or won't) do. And the two biggest bonuses: I'm not on a deadline, and I'm fortunate for the first time ever that I can afford to replace knackered parts with new ones, never been able to do that before.

Keep watching - there will be some progress over the weekend then it'll go quiet for a bit while I sort the wiring!

They are such lovely looking engines aren't they!

Small things matter (well they do to me) ~ I love the rocker protectors, proper period (and what I used to use back in the day).......I'm not a fan of the big, brash modern ally stuff but those are just right for the bike.......you're making me think I should get some for mine now as I'd forgotten about that style :)
