The ‘79 California Rebuild Thread

I saw your heads on Monday when I was at Mike's place - the were looking great.

I can't fault your choice of Silent Hektik. I have his ignition system and alternator on my BMW. Really high quality gear.

Cheers :)

Andres

Salut!

That one was a limited run of “lockdown” from a microbrewery up in Great Milton. I’m now onto the Staropramen.

Thanks Wilb, if I died and went to heaven, it would look a lot like Mike’s workshop.

I’m hoping the ignition is as good as it is expensive! Tomorrow’s gig, heads and barrels, ignition and carbs.

Then it’s time for the frame, engine and gearbox to meet again for the first time in a decade.

This is really coming on nicely :thumb Still following and dreaming of a Cali one day to scratch an

itch, but do i sacrifice one of the Triumph's ???

TBH I prefer the black alternator cover, go figure.

Plastic cover + spacer with ugly scoop is supposedly much cooler for the alternator, so less rotor winding failures.

Ali cover is just much cooler

I knew there was a reason, I remember reading that in Guzziology.

Back to the build, all ready to sort the heads, shim up the valve stacks and put the top end on.

Let’s start with getting pistons in barrels:

Sorted, super fast. I always oil the bores before I stick the pistons in, some say not to ...

Right let’s get the heads made up, where’s my spring compressor?

Bugger, lent it to a mate. He’s not around today. 4rse.

So instead, let’s rebuild the carbs instead.

Old o rings are properly knackered.

IMG_2840.JPG

All new rubber parts, gaskets and cables. That was a pleasant hour, I’d forgotten how much I enjoy servicing carbs.

We’ll get the float levels set up when I’ve got some clean petrol and it’s not hacking down outside. Which reminds me, I must get some fuel filters.

One last job for the day, hit the Opie Oils website to order up my engine, gearbox and FD oils. Now, which oil should I use do you think?

Had a quiet moment before dinner so stuck the pistons and barrels on.

I didn’t mention on the pistons there are three types or ring - dead easy to mix two of them up, fortunately I was paying attention this time.

Bye bye inside of engine
IMG_2856.JPG

Goose up the little end with some oil - carefully selected from whatever I had left.

IMG_2858.JPG

Grease the base gasket and make sure it’s not blanking the wee oil hole, then 2 o rings on the shorter studs.

Pre-position a gudgeon pin circlip. Why’s it called a gudgeon pin, it looks nothing like a gudgeon?

IMG_2860.JPG

Slide it in gently, a slight friction fit.

Arrows on the pistons should be pointing towards the exhaust ports - always worth a check.

Looking more promising, and I have fewer boxes of bits now.

A little more progress tonight. I got my compressor back, and put the valve springs on

IMG_2872.JPG

And clocked the dumb mistake I made yesterday, those O rings don’t go there.

Then started the process of torquing the head, which is a 2 day job.

Down to 25 foot pounds, then 30. Leave overnight for the head gasket to compress a bit, and torque again to 30.
