The ‘79 California Rebuild Thread

Careful nipping that large pinch bolt up, it’s common for the leg to crack because of overtightening .

That’s a superb finish BTW

Good advice Oldrat, thanks.

Postie just showed up with a big box of goodies - exhaust system this time.

Nicely packed in shredded copies of the workshop team’s jazz mags.

I’m not unpacking these jobs yet, they’re going under the bed with the new seat. But you get a quick “flash of the gap” so to speak:

I took a few photos of the wheels dismantling today but left the iPad at work.will post tomorrow

Cheers Mike - look forward to seeing pics of you taking the grinder to my beloved Borranis.

I started little steps towards building the short engine today, as I’m waiting on parts for the gearbox.

All the crevices and threads cleaned out and blown over with the high pressure air hose, then the oil pump and bearing carrier went back in. Pics tomorrow ...

I just discovered this thread from a link on the Guzziriders forum. I also find that I'm a member of this forum - which I must have joined when I had a GS a few years ago.
Anyway, it's making for a very enjoyable read. Sounds expensive, but content yourself with the knowledge that if it was a Ducati Bevel twin, you'd be spending 3 times as much!
I did a similar restoration on a T3 Cali about 5 years ago. Although it was tatty, mechanically it was not bad, so apart from a new clutch and cam followers, most of my expenditure was just cosmetic. I think you'll be pleased with the bike in the end though, and if not there is a strong demand for top quality T3 Calis, so I don't think you'll have a problem finding a buyer.
I'm interested to hear how you manage dismantling the wheels. Getting the spokes out of those hubs is not easy as the stainless spokes seem to weld themselves to the alloy hubs. I had to drill many of them out of the back wheel.
I look forward to the next installment. Here's my before and after photos.

Cheers Mike, sorry I thought that would be a simple job.

No probs on the extra parts, I can run them up to you, or to the wheel builder but probly not until the weekend.

Hi Derek!

Thanks for the kind words, I may get in touch for some counselling. The finished item looks great.

I’ve decided mine will have the black with gold pin stripe

Apologies fellas following this, I got on a bit of a roll tonight, and didn’t have my phone with me.

I might have accidentally put the crank, camshaft, oil pump, flywheel and timing gear back together and not taken any photos.

I’ll make up for it at the weekend.

Not good enough, take it apart again:D. I'm really torn with this rebuild. 1, don't want it to end, 2, can't wait to see the finished product.
I reckon it's going to be one of the best, if not the best, out there. Keep up the fabulous work.

Ha, I was thinking just that :)

Gotta say Nin, I'm impressed with the thoroughness and indeed the speed at which you're piling through this :thumb2

Ah you're welcome. At least you had the good sense to farm out the spoke removal! You're going much deeper mechancially than I ever have. I also refurbed my V7 Sport, but so far I've never removed a crank or stripped a bevel box or gearbox. So this is new territory for me and I'm interested to learn. It would also be great to see the finished article - I'll buy you a coffee in Lechlade / Burford when you're on you're shakedown run.

Regarding paintwork, if you're looking for a cheap and cheerful fix I can recommend Dennis's Motorcycle Resprays in Cirencester 01285 658645. I picked up the bits below from him yesterday and he charged me £450.

I look forward to the next installment!
