The ‘79 California Rebuild Thread

Now it’s time for a shimmy.

Put the shims back how it came out of the box a few weeks ago. (I took some pics to make sure I didn’t forget).

The wear on the selector forks was really nice and even, so I’m hoping it can go back in with no messing.

So pop it in the box, stick the back plate on and check how far you can move the barrel up and down with your finger through the output shaft bearing. We’re looking for hardly anything,

And we get about 1mm. Bugger. No more gearbox build today, let’s get some shims ordered up.

A couple of other jobs I can do mean time - change the pawl return spring. See if you can guess which is the new one?

And fit new bearings to the front wheel disc carriers.

These need to go off to the wheel builder

And I’ve got all this to clean up, and more to do on the wiring loom, so plenty to keep me busy.

BTW if anyone in the Oxfordshire area needs their bits polishing, I can recommend these guys. They did a brilliant (see what I did there?) job on my chrome and stainless parts.

You’re a better engine builder than comedian!

Thanks Brian. A bit frustrating this weekend, I was hoping to get gearbox and short engine together, but it's not to be. Still, the finest malts take longer to mature eh?

So here's a thing. I've just registered an interest in the DGR on 27th Sept 2020 in London. The plan is to get the bike done, run in and ready to make it from Oxford to London and back again. And maybe see some of you there?

Feck, that's only 4 months off, and I've got to find a buyer for my kidney to fund the rest.

Tyres have arrived, they’re only slightly wider than what’s on my mountain bike. Seems a long way off before I’ll need these.

Postie dropped off the shims yesterday morning.

IMG_2679.JPG

A quick after-dinner fettle, I’ve started with 0.6mm on the bottom, 1.2mm on the top, and what feels like about 0.5 - 1mm float.

So I added 0.8 to the bottom and offered it all up, the cases close but there’s no float and the selector barrel won’t spin. I’m not going to take the chance that the end case gasket will add enough clearance so try again.

Dropping it back to 0.6mm and there’s a teeny bit of float, but the barrel spins well and it’s way better than before, so that’ll do.

Gearbox build continues tomorrow .

.... or today in fact.

Seals in and O rings on

IMG_2681.JPG

Yes that seal is just resting, it hasn’t been fully seated yet.

IMG_2680.JPG

Clutch drive on, do it up tight and whack the safety tang over

IMG_2689.JPGIMG_2683.JPG

Then pop all the oojermerflips in with the wassername.

I don't know Guzzi boxes but wondering what the selector fork pins run in.

You win today’s Jaffa Cake! Yes there’s a bit missing. I don’t have the patience to fiddle the selector barrel in today.
