The ‘79 California Rebuild Thread

Totally random so my apologies but it looks like you're on-line Nin.......... I'm buying some fuel line and have had a brain fart and can't check; any idea if it's 5 or 8mm (ID) hose for old school fuel taps like the Guzzi?

Andres

The system’s that fit on the crankshaft are quite a bit more more expensive than the one’s that simply replace the contact breakers with a different type of switch. The crankshaft systems will also have the advance curve programmed into the electronics so avoiding all the issues associated with bob weights and springs and, of course, no backlash from the gears driving the distributor.

Thanks Chas, you’re not wrong!

I’ve had a good read through Guzziology, and decided to stick with the OE points and condensers for now.

When they fail I’ll post up pics and you can all rip the piss mercilessly.

You can always carry a set of points and condenser in your pocket. I’m all for lo-tech stuff, the main problem with points in my experience is poor starting in damp conditions.

Yep, that and the spare clutch cable zip tied to the original, still got a few of the old tricks.

I'm not able to get on here often nowadays.
But this thread is the main reason i do!

I wish i had the skill, thoroughness and speed you have Nin.
Brilliant build, pics and write up.
Thank you.

.... just a few (hah!) jobs around the house to do before i can get near my rebuild. :tears

If you are keeping the points, I recommend knocking up a replica of the factory tool for reaching the dizzy bolts. It's very handy and you'll be using it quite often :D

Good thinking Cookie - I’ve been looking at that. I need to get one in my hands so I can copy it!

I rarely say it a the time, but all my best trips where I’ve met great folks I wouldn’t otherwise, have been when something goes wrong ...

I’m at a bit of a loss now, waiting for parts to arrive and Mikeyboy to finish working his magic.

I’ve found a place to rechrome the headlight brackets, for cheaper than buying new ones which is my test.

These chaps will be winging their way to darkest Birmingham on Monday.

I spose all that’s left is to recheck that wiring loom.

It’s that little bad connection or unseen break that’ll drive me nuts when it’s all back together, and doesn’t work.

A few little steps further. The O rings arrived for the gear box, so that’s it finished and up on the shelf waiting for the engine.

Its been 3 days and i need my (your) fix! Hows it all going Nin?

Sorry Ratty and everyone, I’ve had a few busy days at work, and I’ve been waiting on some bits to arrive before Mike can finish off the FD, heads, barrels and wheels.

All being well I’ll get the last instalment next Saturday, and progress will resume!
