It’s been a while, my times in Llanberis immersed in all things mountain and folklore of heroes long gone. God, I’ve missed this place. You can taste the euphoria and the disaster. Sip on that thought a while at the ‘Melyn cafe’ opposite the famous ‘Pete’s Eats’ - soon to re-open, surrounded by the young & fearless. I was one once - I keep reminding myself.

Take your time.

What awaits you is a tragically short but humbling ride in what I think is the best stretch of road in Wales. I don’t say that lightly. But the light and time has to be right - late afternoon is your two scoops & raspberry sauce.

Wait...

....wait for the hour, the time when the mountains claw at the sun and cast their easterly flanks into shadows. Now is the time to ride from Llanberis up to Pen y Pass. The road twists and turns but no need to rush. Instead feel the mass of these giants left and right with names that are barely pronounceable - Crib y Ddysgl, to name but one. But now look left where the sun is burning the rock and you’ll see the lizards - glimpses of gnarly, tanned and fit-as-fuck rock hoppers. They’re nudging up graded routes with numbers and codes of 6c this or 7b that which mean nothing but for tall tales in the pub later. But for you and I, we need only to know this... two of those routes are called ‘Cemetery Gates’ and ‘Cenotaph Corner’. Just let that sink in for a moment.

Keep riding and climbing pass the timeless granite gate keepers and all too soon the sun will bathe you as you emerge onto the pass. Here you’ll see laden hikers and the weary who’ve trodden the tourist paths up to Snowdon’s summit. Park in front of the stone wall on the right, ‘free’, and watch the rays dance around the peaks for the last life of day. The rest is all yours...

And for the more elderly mountain fraternity amongst us there was the forerunner of Pete’s eats ((now long gone) Wendy’s!
And Joe playing arras (arrows)in the Padarn.

I am blessed to be riding this area when I feel like it (twice a week) at least now I'm retired lol. I have driven and rode these roads for the past 32 years had many a stop in Llanberis (pity the electric mountain visitors centre is gone) and every chippy n cafe. Thank you G&T for reminding me.🏍👍 Keep enjoying everyone.

I didn't know the Visitor Centre has gone. 😞 I take it that includes the bus trip into the mountain to see the turbines etc? Since when and why?

It closed the tours in late 2018 siting not viable (cost too much to operate) and ongoing work. visitors centre was closed in late 2018 and sited the same, permission was approved in December 2022 to demolish it and carry out associated work (to make it nice). The company said it was under used.

Nice write up..this is so close to where a friend of mine lives and I promised I'll visit him on the GS at some point...I just need to find 3 days to disappear from work and family, easier said than done haha!

A good write up on a part of the world I miss.
A long time ago the wife and I were on a long weekend. I woke up early on the Sunday, got the wife up, packed the bike...R100RT...rode from Hertfordshire to Pen y Pass, did the Horseshoe via Crib Goch, and Llewidd, down to Beddgelert, got a lift from a pal back to the bike, rode to Portmadoc , Harlech and Barmouth, across through Bala to the A5 and back to home....long day but a memorable one.
I used to spend at least one weekend a month on the Snowdonia hills...happy days.

Thanks. Shame as I've visited twice and enjoyed the trip into the mountain. Great engineering.

The CAT over towards Machylleth has also been closed. The boys used to love going there for a visit with the old water powered fernicular to get in. I suppose the technology is no longer 'Alternative' and is just run-of-the-mill now. That and I expect their grants were stopped....

Pen y Pass is one of my favourite places to visit, always manage to squeeze my bike in to park and watch the climbers through binoculars.
