The 650 isnt fast enough

+1 Just what I was about to suggest. The close ratio gearbox used on the two bikes means the ratios are always going to be a poor compromise.

Standard sprockets for the F650GS are 41 teeth rear/17 front (2.41)
Standard sprockets for the F800GS are 42 teeth rear/16 front (2.62)

You could go as low as 47 rear/15 front (3.13) You'd end up with a superb commuting bike with the ability to tootle along at walking pace with the clutch fully home. Acceleration would be dramatically improved.

I mainly feel it lacks the grunt to overtake at 60-70mph, would this help in this are at all????

not fast enough?? nooooo

Well, me (on f650gs) and my friend do regular trips out, he rides a BMW1200R, and it really frustrates the hell out of him if we both bolt away from a traffic light and I out accelerate him every time!! Due to a torque curve that is already at it's peak at 3k rpm, his bike needs some time to build up revs and momentum, by that time I'm long gone.... and if he manages to be in front, he does not loose me at all.. Had mine on a dyno, and it went to 205kms/h in 6th with 8k revs, so there you go, start enjoying your little cannonball!!

No. Even more so when two up with luggage. The F800GS might be marginally better but there's no substitute for cc. Mind you, I did 960 miles PLUS a channel crossing in less than 24 hours on my first F650GS twin, so it eats the miles quite well (Torun in Poland to Eastbourne).

No bike is perfect in every scenario, you want more power occasionally but you would pay for it 100% of the time with increased fuel consumption.

I was touring with a mate who was on an 1150GSA and we topped up our tanks at the same time as we went along. He was putting in €30 per stop, I was putting in €18, the difference being enough to pay for my evening meal.
