Now that I have the f800 back we are planning a longer trip. My conundrum is do I trust it? This time we will be going away from civilisation as we know it, where a broken down bike would be a real problem and funnily enough we don't have 4 x 4s and film crews following us. So do I:

Fork out for a lowering kit so I can consider using the bike off the tarmac (it's too big for anything other than smooth roads when I come to stop. I can touch with the points of my toes only, even with platform boots!)

Look for a suitable alternative?

As you all know I've gone to great lengths to get this bike back and I love riding it, BUT …

Get a DRZ400 for a big road/offroad trip

Go slower & let some air-out the tyres whilst off-road. I imagine you will be carrying a compact compressor.

Plan 'B' = Order the lowering kit ;)

ps: Pictures of it didn't happen

A broken bike 'out there' won't be a problem, merely a trigger for the best moments of your trip :thumb2

Get some decent MX boots with some solid soles....they enable you to put full force down through toe-tips, and once you've got used to changing gear in them, they will give you the equivalent of 2-3 inches of leg reach/bike lowering.

Go for it......the debate around what bike is ideal is contentious and never ending, so use what you have, what you know and what you are comfortable on, and accept what comes as part of the trip :clap
