The new 1300adv test ride.

I spec'd it up, (Everything except Adaptive ride height) Then said, OK, why should I buy this from you ?
I have been a customer since 1999. But my last bike i bought from a rival dealership. So he knew He had to do something. He went away. Came back with A reduced price, First service free and 10% off all the extras (Full luggage, Top box, panniers, Tank bag, side bags etc) I was more than happy, and bought it, there and then.

I had a go on the new GSA this morning. Very impressed and plan to order one shortly for 1st March 2025.

Having made the decision to get one, thoughts turned to the luggage system. It’s very different from the 1250. I currently have Burmot hard panniers that are brilliant and don’t poke out further than the handlebars. The luggage on the new 1300 GSA is very wide and sticks out further than the handlebars. I may wait to see if other manufacturers come up with something a bit slimmer in time for my first trip.

Will you get the ASA version or without?.

Going for the ASA. Tried it a few weeks ago on a GS, really liked it. I will also tick the boxes for rider assist and adaptive height control. The technology on the bike is amazing.
Good choice. I'm expecting my new 1300gs next week with ASA.
Had a test ride a few weeks ago and found the ASA made the quick shifter in manual mode brilliant. I did about 30 miles just manual mode and it was so much better changing than my current 1300gs. I can understand those who prefer the idea of a clutch lever and fully manual gearbox but I think after a couple of years there won't be many who have tried the ASA who don't prefer it.
In traffic, or tootle mode, automatic was good. More sporting riding just use the gear lever as you do now but get effortless fast gear changes.
Just hope the mechanical\electronic side of the auto is fault free long term but 3 year warranty for peace of mind on that.

Thanks for the report. 👍

I went along to Lind today specifically to try to make my mind up about my next purchase.

They had three 1300 GSAs in there.
A triple black, red thing and a Rallye. They reminded me of a playmobile toy

I spent a good while poking n prodding around all three until the boss came over and asked if I was ok, or needed help.

I said I have always had GSAs over the last couple of decades, and I came to see the new one in the flesh.

What do you think?

Sorry, not for me, I’d prefer a new 1250 please.

Sadly all gone.

The ride home felt like being reacquainted with a long lost pal.

Wallet securely in pocket. What on earth were BMW thinking?
matey, have a look on Autotrader. There's still quite a few brand new 1250's left at various dealers.

Took one out for a test ride today. After bumbling around in the wet I went back to do the numbers with Vines. Apparently my registered in April 1,216 mile GS Trophy will only cover £17k of the asking price and I’d need to stump up another £6k for a 719. That’s £6k for a bigger fuel tank then.

Bigger tank and of course the 719, the most expensive option you could choose

You’d think that, but it’s only £600 more than a Triple Black GSA they have for sale.

The hard truth is your bike is second hand, they’ve got to sell it and make a profit on it, they’ll probably also service it before sale

What would be the price to change against an identical bike today?

I am currently on my 4th GS: have had two 1200s and two 1250s - my current one a 40th anniversary Bumblebee. The 1250 is a fantastic bike I have ridden lots onroad and also offroad.

Had the chance to ride a manual 1300GSA and also a 13GS with ASA today.

Let’s talk about ASA first. And in Drive mode.

At small throttle openings and slow speed, you can hear and feel it clacking down gears… basically because there is little feathering of the clutch or rev-matching like I would otherwise do. The clacking is unrefined and disconcerting - especially if you ride in traffic or slow urban manoeuvres. Also, when doing slow tight turns offroad, you can’t feather and use the clutch to balance.

On big throttle openings, shifting up gives that noticeable gear change/helmet jerk which is just not as smooth as doing it myself… it’s as if you are always stuck with the QS. If you ride with a pillion, I can see the dreaded helmet-helmet knock becoming a common issue.

But as you brake hard from speed, ASA shifts down the box imperceptibly and remarkably well. Really nice.

In Drive, I never felt at ease with it doing the shifting for me as it was not obvious when it would/would not. And ahifting in manual is simply not as smooth or controlled as me doing it myself.

If wanting an auto, a CVT is far better experience imho. Proper twist and go.

ASA? No thanks.

Let’s talk 13GSA.

One of the biggest issues with the 1250GSA is that it feels wide across the tank, and it looks wide when riding it. When you look down at the clocks, there is lot of fairing that obscures your vision of the road. It makes the bike look and feel bulky. You are definitely sitting in the bike.

But on the 13GSA, the view from the rider position is far less cluttered and you see more of the road. Those transparent side fairings work wonders. As a result, the bike doesn’t look or feel anywhere near as big as the 1250GSA. On the 13GSA, you do not feel as ‘in’ the bike but it is a good compromise to maintain a commanding view of the road.

On the road, this translates into the 13GSA disappearing under you… the tank width is hidden by the bars, and what you see over the bars is smaller than even the 1250GS cockpit.

The gearbox on the 13GSA was beautiful. It switched gears up and down the box smoothly and better than my 40th Anni GS. It manages the 1-2 and 2-1 quickshift perfectly well, which is something I would never do on the 1250.

So overall, I really liked the manual 13GSA. It feels similar to the 1250GS in handling and rideability, and significantly more than the sportsbike-sized 13GS. But the one thing I did NOT like is the overly wide tank width between the knees. The tank needs beating in by about an inch on each side right where the knees are. Then it would be great.

Will I get one? Yes, but only when my 40th 1250GS is ready… maybe next year or even 2026. Not in a rush, but impressed.

Great write up and informative, many thanks.

Get it bought - what’s £6k
Can’t take it with you
Try a PCP, it’ll make it easier to swallow

I enjoyed the test ride, and like the bike, but I keep thinking it’s £6k for a bigger fuel tank.

There’s a whole host of new parts and ideas too
There are, but my GS currently has everything apart from the adaptive height control and that (and the tank size) were the only things I really noticed on the test ride. All things considered if it had bitten me hard enough I’d have haggled (or at least attempted too) on the price and then sighed the line, but it hasn’t. My GS is more than adequate for what I need and the tech on that is still state of the art. It makes me smile when I see it in the garage and when I ride it so I’m happy enough. I was surprised at how a bike could lose £6k in depreciation in 8 months but that’s on me.

£6,000 in 8 months ,I lost £6,000 in 5 years on my1250 Rallye I thought that was bad enough!
