The Next Best Bike in The World Ever......Thread :-)

Have you tried the comfort setting, Giles? I find that when my back is giving me stick at the end of a day on the bike, there's a noticeable difference, and the bike just soaks all the bumps up.

I now get what you said about walking into the garage and just grinning. The XR sort of had that, but this bike just looks at me, all dirty like.:green gri

Arsey has set his quick function buttons to heated grips and heated seat because his bike has that lovely linear feel you only get when electronics aren't constantly fucking up your suspension settings . :D

I have set mine to damping so that within three clicks I'm either in street, 'oi,your nicked, son' or the comfy urban one!

.......................................

I originally got the R 'cos I thought i'd be doing quite a bit of off road stuff. But I didn't do as much as I thought I would and the 21/90/90 was starting to limit my road riding. Psychological ?? Maybe, but I couldn't bury the bike into a corner like I can with a 17 front.

................................

The suspension is actually very good. I mostly leave it in 'street' and only use sport on the smoothest of tarmac. As most of my playtime is back road stuff 'sport' is generally too firm. (This is why in the earlier post I mention that this would trounce pretty much any bike you can think of on the lanes - short of something like a 690 smc. It's got that perfect compromise of stiffness but still with the ability to float over stuff that would have a Blade / R1 protesting too much).
Is the suspension as good as the manual R ? Ummmmmm .... it's a tough call to be honest. The R once it was set up was very very good, and it had that lovely plush linear feel to it. The S has just a hint of a digital feel to it. You can certainly tell it's electronic, you can almost feel it making micro adjustments all the time which whilst in itself is not a bad thing, it doesn't give that plushness that the R had.

:blast I'm a dick!

For some reason I'd got it into my head you'd gone for an R again so was wondering if there was much difference with, if I understand correctly, the new rear shock? Intersecting what you say though, it sounds like the electronic suspension is better than that fitted to the 1190's.

I'm looking forward to hearing how you find the difference in engine characteristics once run in with a couple of thousand miles (and a visit to Geoff?).

So I had another spank yesterday on the way home and yes .... I am pretty convinced that this is a motor that (as good as it is ... and its very very good ..) has EU hands trying to strangle it. I really pick up on that reluctance to just rev freely. It's particularly noticable coming down the revs where it sort of stalls and just abruptly dies in the absolute blink of an eye rather than it free fall nice and smoothly.
You don't notice it so much going up because you're forcing it up with the gas.
Mark at Hilltop wrote something along the lines that the 1290's 'respond particularly well' to a remap and I can sort of see that.
I'm sure it needs to loosen up too ....

From what you say then it sounds like a 'Hilltop' should work wonders :)

Re loosening up, my 1190 seemed to improve rapidly up to about 3,000 miles, most noticeable as it's ability to rev freely. Then, on until around 7,000 miles low down tractability/smoothness improved to the point where it will pull a taller gear for a given speed when pootling around compared to when I first had the bike.....................

After some advice. What exactly is the difference between the KTM SA S and T. You read through endless marketing blurp but it doesn't tell me what the bikes are like. Same features on both bikes to keep the technophobes happy. I understand that the new R is a 1290 with the offroad based wheel sizes. What else is there to know? Sorry, I'm an uneducated BMW rider of the LC variety. I think it is spelled knob here in the orange section :D :aidan

They all have the same frame and engine.

T has larger tank, 21/18 wheels with spokes, dynamic suspension, is whitish and older dash
S has smaller tank, 19/17 cast wheels, dynamic suspension, white/orange or black and new TFT dash
R has smaller tank, 21/18 wheels with spokes, adjustable suspension, orange/white and new TFT dash

Other cosmetic differences apply.

Thanks for the reply Moose. I thought it was 19/17 wheels for the T. Why did KTM not update the dash on the T to the new TFT display? It would make sense.

Ten years of .....er......progress !!

So the KTM My Ride does work,it just doesn't like Scala !!
Having tried to get it working by pairing my iphone to the PHONE and then my Scala Packtalk to the HEADSET RIDER,it all worked except I had no actual music playing in my ears despite it playing on the phone and the left switch gear controls working and the track name showing on the screen.

Anyway,I've returned the Packtalk as it developed a fault on my trip last week, and ordered a new Schuberth C4 with SC1 comms kit that arrived today.

So I re paired my phone to PHONE and then the helmet to HEADSET RIDER and bingo, all perfect.
It does work well, showing what music you are playing, with the left switch gear able to change track/volume etc,and you see on screen who is calling etc.

And coincidentally,as I was doing this I received an email to say I was being refunded the full amount for my Packtalk, which was a result as I was expecting a replacement which I was going to sell .

Anybody got a photo of where the leads from the bike are hidden for the heated seats.

I can't find them?

Thanks

Paddy

So it's off to Hilltop in the morning .
The bike runs rather well as standard but as Officer Dibble has said , the Euro 4 emissions bollox does strangle it a bit.
It doesn't need any more power but will be interesting to see what it makes.
Nutty's Rallye recently made 116 bhp compared to 125 as standard quoted by BMW. On that same basis , KTM quote 118 KW for the 1290 so about 158bhp. So it should be making about 145 bhp after Geoff's magic. Any more will be a bonus (that I'll never need )
