The Next Best Bike in The World Ever......Thread :-)

I think you is right. standard on 14> and retro fittable to 13 MY as Davy F says. £300+ for a software update IIRC

Yes - I've got a '13 R and asked recently at the local dealer who confirmed that the funky lean software was standard on '14+ bikes and so if that's your bag and you've got a spare £350, you'll get a few quid change...

I heard KTM will fit upgrade all the earlier bikes for free:-

New Airboxes
New Wheels
Heat Deflectors

The only condition is........

.....it will be to celebrate Bradly Smith winning a GP for them :D

Due the delay in the 1290Rs being released,I've been toying with trying to get an S instead,as I really want my bike for a big trip in May.
Anyway, had the opportunity to nip out on Premier Bike's demo S today.

Nice bike !
The motor is sublime, pulling from as low as 30 mph in 6th.If you're dong 50 ish in 6th,there's instant grunt even without changing down a gear.
The gearbox is very smooth, probably the best I've experienced on a KTM.
The rider modes work very well, with a very noticeable difference in damping ,say between Comfort and Sport.
The screen works well, set on highest setting.
The menu system is very intuitive and the TFT screen is a revelation, being very bright and readable even in bright sunlight.

So,great bikes but I knew instantly that I would prefer the R.
Called my dealer after the demo and told him not to bother trying to get an S as I would stick with the R,and he said he was going to call me anyway as my bike has supposedly been released at last from the factory, with possibly a mod to be done on arrival.

Happy days !!

I like the black - looks well.

What made you go for the R?

Because I've had a 21/18 wheel KTM continuously since 2004 and just like the feel of them .Plus the taller riding position.
The S is fabulous but the R will be more 'me' !

Fair enough. Any permutation of bike with that 1290 engine will be a load of fun in my opinion.

Oh dear

That makes me sad for my wallet

Just get one, Rick. After my test ride the other day, I'm glad I'm swapping from the XR to the 1290 S. My licence will be happier too!:D

I must have had it just after you then.

Like Arsey said, great bike, fantastic torque, suspension and engine map options work well and it's a relatively small, light bike. I didn't like the screen, but that's just personal preference.

There's clearly a lot of engine management going on given the unsettled tickover speeds and funny noises down there.

So I liked it, but I didn't £15k like it. I will be looking hard at a 2-3 yr old 1190 though.
