The Next Best Bike in The World Ever......Thread :-)

Oh and Arsey, there's also a separate test and dyno run of the Akra silencer which acknowledges that there is zero performance or a significant sound difference for the silencer that "Akra developed closely with KTM" and all for the bargain price of £580 for some.

Looks are obviously a matter of personal taste :D

Fixed.

Must dash, got some twisty Mosel roads to ride

Weight differences .........It might make more sense that there was a 35kg weight difference if those weights were wet not dry. Are they wet ? Doesn't the big 1290 SA have a much bigger tank than 1090R? Just a thought .

The 1290R is a time machine !! This morning I went from Luxembourg to Belgium to France in 4 minutes !!!!

Possible but we're comparing 1190R against 1290R (not the big tanked SA) - mind you, I still find the abbreviated model designations confusing between the various 1190s and 1290s!
Back to your point, KTM 'usually' claim all weights wet (with fuel).......

So I've had my 1290R for a whole 2 1/2 weeks and have put a few miles on it,so just a few thoughts on the bike, should anybody give a toss.I'll probably be repeating some of what I said earlier.
I've given the bike a thorough testing, including high speed two up with luggage, gnarly mountain hairpins, and numerous back roads, plus a rather nice track.

My bike is fitted with extras such as the Travel Pack :

And Comfort Pack:

LIKES:

It's bloody fast.
Handling is fantastic, and feel from 21/18 wheel set up is lovely.
Phone holder is great,as phone is always at 100% charge.
Riding position is very good,at least for me,with seat/peg/bar/screen just right. No back ache or aches between shoulders that I get on most bikes.
Screen on highest position works great for me,at 6'1".It sends clean air into me but not excessive and just right to stop lower back ache setting in on a long ride.
Tank shape is very good at keeping legs dry in rain ,at least when moving.
Pillion comfort is very good-so I'm told !!
Keyless ignition works great and very handy.
Tank range pretty constant at 190 miles leaving 30 ish in reserve.
Quickshifter is great, both up and down the box, with the MSR letting you be a bit sporty with it.Great fun blatting up through the box, then slowing town for a town with a 50KMH limit, just stamping on the lever-5,4,3 then when clear of limit, rapid acceleration back up to a highish speed.Gear change is very slick and smooth.
Hill Hold works very well, not that I thought I would like/need it.
Heated grips and seats both get very hot on Max,so Medium is more than enough normally.
GPS holder positions sat nav right in your eyeline.
The TFT screen is a revelation, combined with the left bar controls.Shortcuts can be set up,in my case UP button for heated grips and DOWN for heated seats.
Cruise control very easy to use.
Lights are fantastic ,especially the cornering lights.
Bumot panniers and Enduristan roll bag,Rock strapped to large KTM tail rack works great.Bumot tool box great for storing chain lock and lube etc.
KTM tank bag is great-holds plenty and doesn't get in eye line or infringe on riding-quick release tank lock and great two stage rain cover which adjusts if you expand the bag up.Sure it's made by SW Motech as same release system as I had on MT10 and top quality.

DISLIKES:

It's too bloody fast !!!
Slight weave sets in above 130mph,two up with full luggage.
Front brake could be a tad stronger.
Front end gets very light, especially with 21" wheel.
Euro 4 emissions pain in arse-slight rev hunting at idle and a flap opens and closes regularly near idle.
'Ergo' seat could be more 'ergo'-I get a bit of a sore arse after about 6 hours, but did 350 miles on back roads today and coped fine.
Screen changes between night and day mode even going under narrow bridge.
KTM My Ride won't connect properly with Scala Packtalk so can't play music,as no sound coming out-think its a Scala issue though.
That's about it but I'm sure I've forgotten something.

Overall it's a stunning bike, with an amazing engine, great equipment/screen etc and more capable than I'll ever be.
Best bike I've owned so far.

And off topic ,I've found (for me) the perfect riding kit,by wearing waterproof jeans combined with the new low Forma Adventure boots which are as good as their taller brother (that are Ride mags Best Buy) and totally waterproof.
I have the normal taller ones but they won't fit under jeans.

The 1290R is totally stable ,two up with luggage at 130 mph.

Just ridden from Düsseldorf to Adenau and unlimited autobahn for 30 miles straight .Could have gone faster but it was very windy and 130 felt enough.

"Slight weave sets in at 130mph,two up with full luggage." (Post 427)

Which is it?

Arsey

Good that you have found yet another "Best Bike so far" ;)

Must say I am very tempted by the new 1290S in white/orange despite my 1190 only being 12 months old :blast

Went to Gear4's open day in Market Deeping today and had a closer look at the new bikes and looks like virtually everything will swap straight over from my old bike - going to try and resist a while longer :augie

I knew the 1290 would be fast , but fuck me, it's utterly barking if you give it full beans.

And the fact that it has a decent tank range , comfort solo or two up, can take luggage and still handle is all I need .

Then again my 950 Super Enduro is all I 'need' !!!

Just had my first service done today, now up to just under 1100 miles, and this bike is bloody brilliant.

So I am still taking it easy and trying to roughly abide by the rev limiter, but did open it up a smidgen tonight on the way home on some nadgery back b roads. Holy fuck this bike is good! What I love is that it's got (proper) sports bike performance, but with a sort of super moto style chassis and suspension.

Yes the Blades and R1's are going too be better on the big A roads, but on the back road stuff this bike is just awesome !! Very quick, very compliant with great handling.

Love it ..!!

Sooooooo....... What do you feel is the most significant difference between Cato and the 1290? And suspension, much difference between Cato's rear shock and the 1290 one with different damping circuits?

Andres

Let me start by saying the 1190R (Cato!) was and still is a bloody good bike. So I did fall out of love with my GS after the appalling gearbox reared it's head not long into ownership (in hindsight I should have kicked up a stink and taken it back to the dealer ..), but I certainly never fell out of love with the 1190.

I originally got the R 'cos I thought i'd be doing quite a bit of off road stuff. But I didn't do as much as I thought I would and the 21/90/90 was starting to limit my road riding. Psychological ?? Maybe, but I couldn't bury the bike into a corner like I can with a 17 front.

So the huuuge difference between this bike (haven't got a name yet!) and cato is that front end feel. And I've got to say, after growing up on sports bikes it's really nice to come home to that fat front wheel under yer bollocks feeling again!

That's the biggest difference - hard fast changes of direction in the nadgery twisties, pushing the bike a little bit into a corner (didn't have the balls to do that on the R).

The suspension is actually very good. I mostly leave it in 'street' and only use sport on the smoothest of tarmac. As most of my playtime is back road stuff 'sport' is generally too firm. (This is why in the earlier post I mention that this would trounce pretty much any bike you can think of on the lanes - short of something like a 690 smc. It's got that perfect compromise of stiffness but still with the ability to float over stuff that would have a Blade / R1 protesting too much).
Is the suspension as good as the manual R ? Ummmmmm .... it's a tough call to be honest. The R once it was set up was very very good, and it had that lovely plush linear feel to it. The S has just a hint of a digital feel to it. You can certainly tell it's electronic, you can almost feel it making micro adjustments all the time which whilst in itself is not a bad thing, it doesn't give that plushness that the R had.

Of course being able to change stuff at the flick of a button is still a great tool. And I regularly flick between the damping settings.

Arsey has set his quick function buttons to heated grips and heated seat because he is a poof. :D

I have set mine to damping so that within three clicks I'm either in street, sport or the comfy urban one!

The motor is bonkers, it genuinely is, and smooth!!! Wow, I'm rolling out of roundabouts in third like a pussy cat. Mine feels quite errrrr .... ummmm ..... precise? It's too 'exact' if you like and needs to breather more. It's like it's holding it's breath all the time and the slightest movement on the throttle has immediate effect. That could be because it's still very new (400 miles) and tight, but I suspect that as Nutty has eluded it desperately needs freeing up of euro red tape. It's a great motor and bonkers power but needs to ahhhhhhhhhh .... and breathe ..... and at the moment it's not doing that.
I'm confident that 1000 miles and a bit of Geoff will sort all that out.

You need to test ride one Andres! It's very very good ..... :thumb2

(Piccies over the next few days I promise .. !!)
