The pro shift - meh

To be honest if you are just meandering , chilling, taking it easy, cruising etc it's bloody crap. Proper going for it like at cadwell, silver stone it's great.

Taking my iam masters I quickly realized it wS no use whatsoever. Just not smooth enough. Still love it though, for when I'm going for it ( totally illegal mind ).

Got an R1200RS as a loan bike from Coopers BMW today. Along with the keyless ignition it is equipped with GSAP. I was contemplating retro-fitting it to my GSLC, but now I'm not really sure what to make of it. I think that I can be a lot smoother with the clutch, but with the throttle wide open it is fun to just feed it gears - but the throttle has to be wide open, otherwise there's a definite jerk to each up shift. Down shifting is cool, again at speed. Just stamp on the lever and it drops down a gear. Given that I'm looking at best part of £500 to fit it, I think that I'll pass. Might be an option to tick if I ever come to update the GS...

The shift assist and most other Q-shifters were never meant to be used from 1st into 2nd reason being the throw between 1-2 is to long due to neutral so ideally 2nd up is where you should be using it.

Works well 1st to 2nd on the XR and indeed all the other gears up and down

I agree. The quick-shift on my 1300s and S1000RR were brilliant but the one on my GS is shit so much so I rarely use it. It seems I have to put far too much pressure on the gear lever to make it cut the engine which cannot be doing the gearbox any good. If I change gear without using the clutch by reducing the throttle the changes are great. I thought computers were supposed to do a better job than us humans but in this case it can't. Interestingly, I recently re-set the gearbox perimeters with a GS911 and after the bike had ' re-learned' whatever it had to it now works much better. If the sensor on the gear change could be made much more sensitive I think it would work much better.

How did you learn to do that with the GS911?

I've reset my service indicator but don't know how to get it to do anything else

It's all very well for you BMW owners, but only being able to shift when the throttle's wide open means it's not going to see much use on my 1190. No wonder KTM never bothered to fit one :D

So do you ride with the throttle closed most of the time then?:augie:D

I updated it (my GS911) to the latest software because they've recently added many more things it can do, then hooked it up and played with each of the subjects. One of these was update/reset gearbox settings, so I did it thinking it couldn't do any harm because my gearbox and quick-shifter have never been great. It took around 30 mils for the bike to re-learn whatever it needs to before the quick-shifter would work but now seems to work better.

Can the gear shift assist be fitted to a 2013 bike? How much does this cost? Just purchased a 2013 TE. The Triple Black I tried last week was unreal with this and I probably can't live without it ;)

It's nothing to do with neutral being there (between 1,2) ....Its simply because the difference in gear ratios is larger than the change between the other ( higher) gears.

You probably will have to live without it, the BMW one anyways because I think it has to be a very late 2013 chassis number to have the requisite wiring needed to have it fitted.

I wanted one on my Sept 2013 registered but can't.
