The Ring. How bad is it really?

Pretty sure it is closed december to February incl. If not....just go and hire a Suzuki Swift between you and your mate. It will lap far quicker than you think. c 500eu incl 4 laps. https://www.rent4ring.de/en/rentals-for-the-nordschleife.html
It will be far more enjoyable in a small car set up for the track and known by all who lap regularly as a rental so they know to be aware of you. It will also ease the worry of having an off and a big bill. (You'll still have a bill, just not one that may change your life...call it doom-mongering or call it being sensible ?)
The big issue now is the speed differentials between the tourists and the really quick folk.

What Arsey said. I’ve been quite a few times on bikes and twice in cars. Take it at a pace that’s within your ability, keep an eye on your mirrors and be aware that you will get passed, and not everyone who passes you has done it through skill and ability, some of them are on their ragged edge and need watching. Other than that, it’s still just a road really.

It is classified as a road, you must have insurance .... but your insurance will not be valid. If you crash or break down the Nürburgings garage will recover your 'bike and take it to their garage.

Insurance companies specifically exclude der Nürburgring .... not without good reason,

I love the place, done three High Performance Courses there. If someone comes up behind you they're travelling quicker than you. They should give you space and overtake on the right, because it is a road. If they know what they are doing they will have a notion wether or not you know what you're doing. If they think you do they will overtake any side, iff not they'll cut you some slack. There are those on the ragged edge that have no idea! Don't move out of the way for anyone ... you might move in to the path of someone else.

Go, have a run round, treat it with respect and enjoy.

Just been there and done that (a couple of weeks back)
Thoughts : Check opening times- open season times are weird !! Sat and Sun approx 12 hrs per day , Weekdays 2 hour window !! - Yes 2 Hours , approx 5pm to 7pm !!
Closed season - closed from about now (approx) till weather warms up (?? Feb /march ... check) ... it's shut !

Bikes were stopped when we were there -cold track temp , accident , mess ... clean up materials put down , no bikes for lots of hours !!

Start with a Taxi lap : 99 Euros in a Hyundai i30 N Performance , I drive in motorsport , and was not expecting to be impressed. I was VERY impressed. equivalent of an 8 minute lap. Actually I was very very impressed. Guy had done 600 + laps , he knew exactly where he was going . Tyres last 25 laps (That's £40 per lap , at a grand for a set of tyres) . We were overtaken by nothing , and passed about £30 Million worth of performance Porkers etc ... who thought they could drive.

After this , and you have witnessed the range of driver performance , noticed that 80% of the corners are blind !! , and there is a lot of altitude change ... you can decide for yourself , I decided to leave the bike at the Schmitt Family Hotel (worth staying at !!)

Taxis book inside circuit , lap tickets purchased outside circuit - just across the road from the entrance. It's a mad place ... great but mad. I would go back for another taxi lap !!

Myself and an elderly friend did it in some sort of BMW and I didn't think I'd be remotely bothered but it was quite the experience. If you do go down this route try to sit in the front, I let my much older friend sit in the front as it was far more his sort of thing and I felt quite nauseous for 5 or 6 hours afterwards.

Feb the Nurburgring is closed, so we'll just visit around. That's one thing sorted.

I just learnt (yesterday) that Germany requires winter tyres on all vehicles.
I travel regularly through Europe in winter, mostly at xmas time to go to Rome and all these years, and on 5 different cars I always used normal tyres and had snowchains or snowsocks in the boot in case of police checks. Never considered the German law variation

Thats what i did in a Porsche GT3 RS was fantastic. 300 euro though.

If I remember rightly (I lived in Germany for like 15 years) the tyres must have M&S (Mud and Snow or Matsch und Schnee) or a picture of a mountain, however the law is one of those weird ones. If you are caught driving without them during slushy/snow etc its a fine and points
But if there is no snow or slush etc then you can still drive with normal tyres on.
Also you can have normal tyres on if the car isn't being driven.

Not that weird. Most of the midweek times are taken up by commercial bookings for testing and perhaps training.

The weather gets really cold around now and they still have a proper winter. If you’re lucky Micky will dig out his ‘following a snow plough’ pictures.
