The sorry saga of 1200GS/GSA fuel pump controller failures (410 so far)

It's still on a slope in your link. As per AberdeenAngus it's only the very corner that can sit in a pool which is just heatsink. They also don't have the stupid cover that the early bikes had. I haven't seen any wholesale failures like the early bikes either.

it's still on the same tank, in the same position, and it gathers water in the same way as it always did.

as i explained, it's not the water pooling per se that causes a problem, it's IF it gets to the connector underneath. the reason there are less failures is because dealers made sure the FPC was fitted properly + sealed it with some sort of red greasy gunge, and BMW updated the FPC. when the black units appeared, the failures almost disappeared on both the GS and the GSA.

maybe there's an underlying problem?

maybe you're just unlucky?

maybe everything i've posted is rubbish?

i don't care. my FPCs (4 of them. 2 silver, 2 black) have been fine. i'm off for some dinner :)

Well add another one to the list as my 2008 GSA controller packed up tonight at 14000 miles ............... rang the AA and after explaining what the fault was they said it would take an hour to get to me as that was the nearest Motorcycle recovery vehicle ........... they arrive one hour later with no means of recovering my bike ........they really are totally useless fuckwits that run their call centres. Had to get the son to bring out my controller bypass lead that I'd stupidly never even opened or placed on the bike since I bought it from here only to find that it wouldn't reach my auxiliary socket so had to extend it to plug it in ( in hindsight we should have just chopped the plug off my controller and used that to make the lead.

Mine failed in Western Australia, not a cloud in the sky and the FPC wiring connectors had never seen rain. I'm convinced a large capacitor on the FPC circuit board had failed. I always carry a bypass cable (along with a small Torx tool)made from my original FPC connector.

Just a thought; could a bypass lead be made with the plug on the end that fits the 'sat-nav' power connector on the head-stock?
This would then only be powered with ign. on and not overrun as would a lead on the accessory socket.

Sure i read the pump draws more than the 5a the canbus sat nav plug gives, happy to be corrected though

Rang BMW GB this morning and my 2008 GSA is indeed due a recall on its fuel pump assembly ................ shame they didn't tell me before it left me stranded on Friday.

The local dealer rang me about 10 minutes ago and initially said there was NO recall due on the FPC only a safety check on the flanges for leaks, I explained that a couple of owners had contacted me to say they had just had theirs done, and within a couple of minutes he rang me back to say that despite the system not showing it being due he had read through a previous recall notice about FPC's and in that it said that all silver ones should be replaced for black. Due to my work I have it booked in 2 weeks today.

You are correct, the fuel pump will trip the accessory socket supply. My emergency lead connects directly to the battery terminals.

So I took the GSA in this morning as arranged to have the safety recall on the tank flanges and the new FPC fitted only to be told when I got there that the FPC would NOT be replaced FOC :-( ............. so cost me £96 for the unit despite them saying that the silver controllers should be changed FOC for black ones they are now saying that that ruling only applies to certain bikes and mine isn't one of them.

Which dealer was it and how does it only apply to certain bikes eg frame number?

Astles at Grimsby (laceby ) , only applies to certain models they say and that list doesn't include the 2008 GSA

I did guess it was Astles but now it's confirmed I will call them to ask what is on the list :beerjug:

Ok my 06 reg GS and a mate's 57 GS are due a fuel pump check They are calling it a campaign and not a recall
Astles are doing the check at next service they say so I'm not sure where that leaves me since I don't want them to do a service at their prices
So what does the collective think is the best course of action for those of us who self service?

Ring BMW UK direct because if it is the same SAFETY check that they did on my 2008 GSA you don't need to wait until a service (the safety check is regarding fuel leaks from the pump flanges , apparently they removed the tank on mine and fitted reinforced steel flanges ) I'm not sure if this is just Adventure models or the standard GS as well.

flanges

Took my '05 RT in for a brake service at Astles and while it was in they did something on the top of the fuel tank, presumably the flanges you're referring to. No charge but no contact prior to my visit either to say it needed doing. Something to do with one incident in America leading to a worldwide bulletin being issued.
