The sorry saga of 1200GS/GSA fuel pump controller failures (410 so far)

I honestly can't remember the number I rang ,I just went on their motorcycle webpage and found the number there.

Just got off the phone with BMW (on the number above), they say that the fuel flange upgrade is only required on certain models and that DVLA have written to all those concerned. So basically if you haven't received a letter than don't worry! I may check with my dealer as I purchased the bike 2nd hand only a few weeks ago so maybe the previous keeper received the letter before I purchased it?

Am new to the forum.
I had a FPC failure on my '06 GS. It was in '08 or '09. In the middle of Hammersmith roundabout. Thing just shut down while in motion.
Had to call AA. Recovered it to dealer. Dealer installed new controller.
Lost a few hours having to wait around for recovery. Go to dealer for pick up, etc. Not an example of BMW quality at all.

My fuel gauge keep f***ing up. One minute its showing two bars and a range of 87 miles, then its showing 5 bars and a range of 200+ miles!!

Bloody hell mate, after 5 or 6 years it's still grating on you? You really know how to hold a grudge ....:D

Well after being told by BMW customer services that if I haven't received a letter then mines not on any recall list, I phoned my local BMW dealer who informed me that my 2009 GSA is indeed part of the recall and so I've booked it in to be sorted. Certainly worth phoning your dealer and asking them.

The Internet is oh so useful sometimes.....

Hi Andy,
I must say a big thank you for your article on the failed fuel pump controller.
I live in Perth and work as licenced aircraft engineer.
Yesterday travelling home from my night shift at 4.30 in the morning my bike just stopped and I coasted to a stop.

Everything seemed normal with fuel qty and power.
On the side of the rode on a main freeway after 12 hr nightshift. No joy!
I googled my I phone and came across your site.
Jumped in a taxi and off home to think about what to do next.
I grabbed the multi meter ,wire and tools and headed back to my bike.
Ran a harness direct from battery and joy!
I am going to make a setup like you demonstrate as a spare.
When I removed the electronics from my controller I found quite a bit off corrosion internally to the heat sink.
Looking at the design ,the ingress of water appears to be around the black plug receptacle as water can pool in the area where the black plug exits from the heat sink .
I will seal this area with non corrosive silicone.
Again thank you for the article.
Can I just add after pressure washing my bike a month ago I experienced a intermittent miss in the engine, only happened briefly then all ops were normal till total shutdown.

Best regards

Bruce Kerl

Did the design / location of the FPC change with the intro of the cam heads in 2010? Just wondering?

2008 the position was slightly changed and somewhere around there they dumped the cover. 2010 they came out with the black coated one for the recalls.

- When did it happen? 13/06/16
- Where were you? Home - UK Aldershot
- rider name Simon
- bike details (model and year) R1200GS 2004
- remedy I suspect I'll have to buy a new
- How many days work/holiday did you lose? 1 - took train instead
- Were there any incidental costs? Yep

So what's the situation here? I had a recall for the final drive and they said there was an outstanding fuel related recall so that was done. This was about 6 months ago. Is this replaced with some good will or not? I'll have to do the fit myself as it's in the garage and won't go unless I can find connectors to make a patch lead.

A dealer should tell you whether it was changed or not and I suspect it was given the age. If it wasn't done under the recall, you never know, you might get lucky with a replacement.

I bought a black painted type for 1/2 price that the previous owner had kept as a spare but never used. It's now running on my bike with my (still working) original in the spares box.
