I am sure it is the problem fuel relay thingy from the symptoms....

When: March 2009
Where: Dublin, Ireland. Test riding a dealer bike before a purchase of a 09GSA
Name: Xavi Potau
Bike: 2007 1200GSA
Remedy: BMW Assistance. Guy came with a spare: "I knew it was this it happens all the time, but should be fixed in the new model"

When: March 2009
Where: Birmingham, UK
Name: George Williams
Bike: 2004 12GS
Remedy: Fuel pump controller failure symptoms started. Fitted the spare I have bought the previous week and straight back on the road. Time off road 25 mins. If you haven't had the failure yet buy the spare.

Little late but....

Fuel pump driver failure from water ingress into void under FPD modual...
When: March 2,2009

Where: litterally in the middle of "No Where" about 10 miles south of Fort Davis Texas, just me and the tumble weeds.

Bike: 2007 GS Adventure w/22,573 miles

Remedy: new fuel pump driver installed from "show room bike".

Incidental Costs: nothing,nadda,zilch,zero.
BMW Roadside Assistance dispatches Recovery Truck 402 miles away, to pick me and the bike up ...ETA 9hrs.
Recovery truck takes me and the bike to the nearest Dealer "Alamo BMW" in San Antonio Texas, which is 402 miles back to the east...ETA 8hrs.
Bike is repaired and I am on the road again in less than 1½ hours.

Extra precaution: 1200 miles later when I got back home to Chicago,I removed the FPD and resealed the "blue gasket under the modual" with RTV silicone sealant to prevent future water ingress to the void.

Thanks for the report. I won't add it into the UK figures but it's good to confirm this is a worldwide problem. I sometimes think the UK must be alone in this quest!

2004 1200 GS 20,000 miles
Today (06/04/09)
1/2 mile from house so got trailer and took bike back home.

Funnily enough I only looked at the FPC yesterday and was pleasantly suprised at how clean it was. I popped it off and also noticed no sign of water underneath it! So I guess I made matters worse, should have left well alone!

When did it happen - Initial symptoms 27/03/09 (fast lane of the A435), permanent failure 06/04/09.
Where were you - Home
rider name - Ian Whitehouse
bike details (model and year) - R1200 GSA, 57-plate 2008 version.
remedy - FPC replacement. Replacement part no. differed from original.
How many days work/holiday did you lose? 1
Were there any incidental costs? No.

Hi, just a short reply to the fuel pump failure thread. My 2007 GS had a fuel pump failure after only 8000 miles. I was not suprised when I saw where they had placed it. The BMW mechanic also damaged the O ring seal that is suposed to prevent water getting into the connection. I asked my local BMW dealer in Bristol to fit a new O ring as there is nothing now to stop water ingress. They replied that it is not a stock item and cannot help?? 4 BMW's in the last 4 years, 1 axle failure in Austria, 1, 2000 mile 1200GS replaced due to engine failure, 1 fuel pump failure, 2 Ignition rings and a failed battery. BMW make great bikes but they need to get their reliabillity sorted.

My friends 58 plate RT SE 460 miles. Owned for one week direct from BMW.

FPC Failed today and he called BMW assistance twice, had to wait three hours to be told by an engineer that it was the old FPC problem and that he should call his dealership to collect the bike!

I'm not impressed as I'm about to pick up a new model next week...

- Where were you?Luckily just outside Newcastle after i'd ridden from Norway back to the UK
