The best hotel I have found for a first night in France is Le Florence at St Quentin. As cheap as one of the industrial estate prison hotels, in the centre of town for a good beer and meal, secure parking.

Fully agree with Matt, Le Florence is great. Stayed there last year on our way back to the Tunnel. Very French with lots of quirky features,(check out the plate warmer radiator in the breakfast room) good breakfast by french standards, right in the middle of town with locked parking. Ask for a room at the rear or you could be bothered by traffic noise.
