Hi all -

My s1000XR just got stolen this morning. Im insured with Ageas and wondering if anyone has gone through a theft claim before?

I just rang them and they asked for a load of info, gave all of it, then said a loss handler will call me and I need to have my last MOT certificate ready and the last V5C.

Had my GS disappear last year. Had a police crime number and the insurance company wanted that, scan of the V5 (I still have the original and key), and the receipt (it was only a few months old)

The insurer basically said “ it’s gone” and the adjuster called me with a settlement figure. Less the excess.

It was painlessly simple, suggesting they are used to the process and have little hope of the bike being seen (in the UK?) again

Thanks for the info

Insurance is now asking for a pic of my garage even though it was stolen on the street :D, and a lot more info.

Good thing to know they try to get out of paying real hard.

I would never insure with Ageas to be honest.
I know its not bike related but my mother had tiles blown off her roof and it left a hole which was letting rain in.
she rang their emergency number and they said because it wasn't a storm they wont pay out.
at the same time the M62 was shut due to high winds and the MET office named it Storm Arwen.
even though we pointed this out we got nothing.
Mum had to pay for a roofer to do the work.

Ageas are crooks, good luck you might need it.

Disgusting, it does seem that they're assh×les. Its only because it's through Swinton and this insurance was by far the cheapest.

now that is interesting.

so if you lie and say you have a garage, to get cheaper theft cover, and your bike is stolen from somewhere else....they won't pay out?

Break of contract if declared garaged, I guess, despite the location where it was stolen.

A friend had the same experience.

In all fairness, I’d expect the insurer to ask a photo when signing the contract, so if everything is not compliant it can be squared off in advance.*

When I quoted with Hagerty last year, they told me they’d need a photo of the garage when STARTING the insurance contract and I would have been very happy to oblige.

*this on the assumption that they want to be anal about details that, again, it’s fair, but then we do that in advance.
Most probably it’s just to establish “brick built and all” but still.

or...
Will they say you should have parked it in your garage, like you said on your insurance application

Where is the vehicle parked overnight: Garage ✔️

yes, it is a simple breach of contract through misrepresentation of the facts to gain a favourable premium

or maybe read the small print in endorsements that usually says, "parked in the garage when at home between the hours of 10pm and 6am"

by far the cheapest
Usually for a reason.

Anyway, check you policy. I struggled with this for years as I used a garage that would shut at 8pm.
A decent number of insurers just double the excess if the bike is not parked in the garage overnight, doesn't mean not having a cover at all. Just check.

Also, again, we're assuming here. It might have been stolen during the day.

Good luck.

And there is your mistake right there

I use a local company and know the folks in the office fairly well from 30 years of insuring stuff with them and I shop around every renewal

So many folks use the "Cheapest" I would rather pay 50 more rather than involve scheisters like Ageas or Bennet's were another one doing dodgy swerve moves a few years back

This ^^^^

I use local brokers for my insurance

Maybe it’s dearest- but the service is great

How is my garage at home a factor ?

i assume because you have knowingly lied to your inurance company, if you said you have a garage, and you dont

I have a garage

I have declared it

My bikes only have to be garaged between 10pm & 6am

I pushed it in at 9.59pm last night 😉🏍️🤔

you seem to be comparing services from a broker and the practices of an underwriter. Using a particular broker is no guarantee an underwriter will make a decision in your favour or process the claim in a timely manner.

On my rating table, Ageas are near the top with Aviva and LV Highway. I would certainly use them in preference to any of the Markerstudy brands or Hastings.

(Some) Insurances will check everything to pay less or not pay.
I agree with you, and it would be probably something that can (a lot can) be discussed in court.

But from, sadly, a friend's experience, they do ask you to show the garage if it is a clause. Even when the bike was somewhere else, so they can claim (or try to) breach of contract, in case.

Eh?

If my bike was stolen at Moffat last weekend & I live in Yorkshire

How is my garage at home a factor ?

you seem to have misunderstood the point @er-minio was replying to

your circumstances are different to someone who claims to have a garage when insuring a bike but has lied to gain a lower premium

in the event of a claim, an insurer might ask you to prove you took out the insurance in good faith i.e. you told the truth on your proposal form about having a garage and other factors that would affect the premium. This would apply even if your bike was stolen from home or Wigan, and most likely even if you are making a damage claim. The insurer might also ask to see proof of your occupation, your driver's licence and ask for a code to check for convictions. All part of their due diligence as a small proportion of motorists take the piss when completing a proposal form. No different to you running a credit check on your clients. Unlike financiers, I guess they have decided it is not economic to make these checks before issuing a policy as the great unwashed would not want to pay the additional admin costs needed for such onerous tasks.
