There once was an ugly duckling - The tale of D468ABL

Hey Mick, how you doin? I said I was going to do a number on it when I bought if off you. Sometime over next summer I'll bring it up so you can have a go on it and see what I've done. There's very little left of the original bike tbh,but I hope it's going to be as good to ride as it will be to look at.:D

I'd have loved to have built it for £9250,unfortunately for me, it will cost more than that to complete.:comfort

I looked at a HP2,but had already started on my airhead,so it wasn't to be.They're lovely though aren't they?.:D

Here's a few more pics of the engine in the frame ( nice sunny day).

Hey Shurv

It`s looking great, and like I said earlier,I`m chuffed that my first ever BMW is still alive and going through a fantastic transformation. :thumb2

Glambabe was delighted to hear about it too...I`m going to show her this Thread when I see her next.
It was the first BMW she ever went on...and we had a few fun trips on it,even when I had my Oilhead 1100s at the same time.

She`d love to see the bike when it`s all complete,so feel free to pop over here for a brew and a gab when it`s done.
Unless we could pop over to you sometime?

:drool awesome sir

btw is 50mm extension on the swingarm enough? the front looks quite tall?
(might just be the angle of the pics...)

Marcus - dont forget to get yer place booked at the Airhead weekend - then we can all get a jack-on admiring it
There may be more questions than you need though cos it looks like everyone wants one of these now :)

The spires bent :ymca
Skygods not sure - and he is nearly old enough for an airhead
I bet Shurv's not far off first time he goes out on it
semi at least :thumb2

Tarka ,happy to come up, I'll need to get some miles on it when it's finished, my daughter has just moved to Manchester , so I can double up on the trip up to you.!!

Newguy, 50mm gives it more suspension travel ( Moorespeed's version does) than the original Dakar bikes had,but 100mm makes them bloody tall, in fact too tall fior most riders,so you only want 100mm if you are going to desert race the thing.50mm is plenty.:thumb2

I have been thinking on this with respect to my own project bike. It is important to retain the same steering head angle - so if you go up on the front you need to go up on the back to compensate.

Most people with your fork conversion go 100mm on the rear to compensate for the increase in height of the front forks. If you are tryng to keep your seat height low, does this mean that you have shortened your forks at all?

no its not, you can change it accommodate modern forks, tyres and brakes and the conditions you ride in.

If you raise the back to much, you'll flog out your UJ's quicker

OK - you don't need to keep it the same - but you don't want to change it radically. Most enduros have a head angle of around 61-63 degrees. STD GS is 62. If you put 10cm longer forks on you push angle out to less than 60 degrees as longer forks reduce the the headangle. Bring the back up brings the head angle back to what it should be. Handling is really sensitive to head angle.

We talking about lengthening the monolever to raise the backend - keeping the angle between mono and gearbox as straight as possible therefore no effect on UJ's

I was interested in Shurv's design as the "usual" monolever mod is to go 100mm with the 10cm longer forks he is using. But he is only going 50mm on the mono to keep the seat height lower so I was wondering if he'd done anything to make the forks shorter ot "keep in balance"

I am interested in this as I don't want a high bike either as I'm only 5'8". I have deliberately chosen forks that are shorter (only 6cm longer than standard) than the WP USD's and have been wondering on 100 or 50mm for the rear.
