I have bought some good camping gear from www.rei.com in the US (pity bout shipping costs)

What about UK & EEC internet sites for buying professional camping equipment for use on touring?

Ever tried any of that freeze dried camping food? There are some excellant varieties on the market and makes a change from the old days when it was Heinz beans or spaghetti in the ex-army mess tin.

Bugger it, exped it is.

If i cant get a good nites sleep it'll cost me more in B&B's.

Ive got at least 40 nights of campin with the misses to do in the foreseeable and hell has no fury like a tired grumpy woman :P

Firstly, I didnt do camping, heaven forbid, stupid idea:spitfire

However, at the beginning part of the year I decided to give it ago. In fact there is a thread on here somewhere that I started asking which one was better.

In the end, I opted for the Exped 9DLX as this was the one that came across as the best choice by most people.

Used it for the first time at the GS Club Rosedale event for two nights, slept like a log.

Then used it for two nights at a local Scout event, then two nights at the Hogroast.

I could not have wished for anything any better, just like sleeping in my own bed..:clap

In fact, its quite good this camping lark....apart from pi55ing in your shoes outside yer tent in the middle of the night. :o

A worthwhile bit of extra insulation can be had from a piece of laminate flooring underlayment, the thin closed cell foam type, used as an extra groundsheet inside your tent under your Exped/Thermarest
It comes in rolls about 4ft 6in width,is very tough but can be easily folded into a square and stuffed in a top box, most flooring shops should be able to sort you out with an offcut, used mine for years now.

And another vote for Exped :thumb

The Exped is one of the most comfortable lighweight camping mats I've tried but the first one started leaking then delaminated, I had it replaced used it for 3 weeks and now this one goes down overnight:thedummy:mad:

I'll be calling TravelDri for another replacement.

i have used thermarests for years - himalayan and alpine climbing and general dossing. can't reccommend them enough

I have the 9cm and the 7cm Exped - they are great as long as you don't overinflate them. however, they are also quite narrow - your arms will hang over the side unless you buy the extra width version.

Check out www.alpkit.com - they do a 7cm thick self inflating mat for about £30 which looks very comfy.

Thermarests do work, I've used one on a 6 month trip in Africa and it was grand. As with any mat though, the best way to be comfortable (if on not too hard ground) is to dig a hip hole and a shoulder hole - two shallow gently curved depressions in the ground - place the mat over them, lie in the right place (!) and on your side you feel like you're in a good bed. Make the hip area a bit wider and on your back you're comfy as well. It lets all your side be in contact with the "bed".

Enjoy.

Yep I've had one their great  sold it and bought an Exped.

Happy nights.

I've used a three quarter Geleret self inflating kip mat for the last few years, I've always slept well on it even though I have back trouble, it folds down nice and small and its cheap.

Happy camping :D

I bought my Thermarest in 1997 and have used it regularly and for the most part not bothered to store it half inflated and folded in half as recommended. It still does a fantastic job. My old karrimats are relegated to kneeling/lying down jobs in the garage! :D

Have you a exped trippy:rolleyes::D

Ive had both, but the only one that has survived the test of time and use is the thermarest.:thumb
Bare ice and Iraqi deserts.
So im for thermarest.

I bit the bullet and bought an Exped dlx9. Not cheap at 175 euros, but i know from experience that youll pay anything in the middle of the nite when your cold and tired!!

I tried in the shop laying on the exped and the thermarest. To be honest the thermarest felt better to lie on, but its a perfectly flat shop floor. What did it for me tho was the size of the exped over the thermarest, i travel mostly with my woman so everything is doubled!

Just back from Poland, slept like a log, better than my own bed. I dont have an expensive sleeping bag and the only time i woke up in the nite was from a cold ass. It was just off the exped, not even on the ground. Rolled over a bit and i was instantly warm and sleeping like a log.

Cant recommend exped highly enough!
