Things to check before 300 miles on untested oilhead

I'm not particularly concerned neil, though AFAIK an mot doesn't check for oil in the FD or gearbox. doesn't hurt to do at least a quick check before setting off I reckon.

The fact it made to the MOT station and back would suggest it has oil. :D

If it breaks on the way home just get a recovery truck with your insurance. Maybe the bike is fine. Their reliable donkeys, I'm sure it'll all work out.

How many people would do a full oil service on a bike they have purchased outside the vendors house ?

No one I know.

Check it over for general condition.
Hand over the money if your happy.
Grab the paperwork.
Climb on the beast and ride it home.

300 miles, you will have to stop for petrol at some point.
Give the bike another glance over, climb on and complete your journey.

Ownership of a GS is privilege and you will enjoy the experience.

I would check levels and brakes and tyers and ride sensibility. JJH

.
Some sense is spoken ... If the OP is that concerned about riding a bike that's just passed an mot 300 miles he shouldn't be buying it.

Spot on

Although after my recent experiences with old brake hoses, that's what I'd be more worried about than oils etc.

Borrow a trailer or hire a van for the day if you're that worried about it.

Don't know if the 1100 is the same but you don't lose any oil removing the filter on the 1200, other than what is in the filter itself. If so you could just change filter and make sure oil level is ok.

Safe journey, let us know how you get on. I purchased an R1100RS in February last year, checked the oil level and tyre pressures and made sure the brakes worked before I rode it the 150 miles home. I had made sure I had breakdown cover beforehand just in case!

Walk round

It's a BMW
Walk round bang and wiggle everything
Check tyre pressures
Roll them look for cuts or nail
Tread is legal
Check fluids visually
Start it up from cold listen to unusual rattles
Check lights indicators and horn
Get it taxed insured ride it home
Breakdown cover essential
ENJOY the ride home smile

on your way down stop off at junction 63 on the a1,pick up my clip together trailer and put it in the back of your car ,then clip it together when you get there.put bike on then bring it back up to here co durham ,then ride the rest of the way .all it will cost you is a crate of budweiser .
all this is only possible if you have a towbar off course. :thumb

fizzer what an exceptionally decent offer, thanks. i am just going to ride it up though. looking forward to it, not been on a bike since i took my airhead apart last year. i was never particularly worried about it, just wanted a heads up in case there was anything crucial, particular to these bikes, that i should watch out for. im happy just to get on with it now :beerjug:

Read up on checking oil levels before you have a panic while having a quick glance at the oil window on the way home.

How does he get the bike or his car from yours back home??

If I were your dad i'd convince you it'd be better for me to ride it home and you drive the car:rob

Enjoy your ride and enjoy the bike:thumb2

Twice now I've flown up to Edinburgh, checked out the bikes ( 100PD and an 1100GS) and rode them back to Leicester.... both got me home without any drama.... Just have a good look around the bike before you get on it :thumb
