I'm not particularly concerned neil, though AFAIK an mot doesn't check for oil in the FD or gearbox. doesn't hurt to do at least a quick check before setting off I reckon.

If it breaks on the way home just get a recovery truck with your insurance. Maybe the bike is fine. Their reliable donkeys, I'm sure it'll all work out.

How much do you want to check? Bought a 'rebuilt' 350 Morini years ago, rode it back to Mansfield from Eastbourne.....when they rebuilt the crank they forgot to put the crank plugs in.....wanna check that out?

Although after my recent experiences with old brake hoses, that's what I'd be more worried about than oils etc.
Borrow a trailer or hire a van for the day if you're that worried about it.
Don't know if the 1100 is the same but you don't lose any oil removing the filter on the 1200, other than what is in the filter itself. If so you could just change filter and make sure oil level is ok.

Safe journey, let us know how you get on. I purchased an R1100RS in February last year, checked the oil level and tyre pressures and made sure the brakes worked before I rode it the 150 miles home. I had made sure I had breakdown cover beforehand just in case!

agreed .I picked one up 3 years ago in Nottingham , rode it through a thunderstorm to Brighton no bother at all , used a bit of oil but otherwise faultless . good luck and enjoy it
on your way down stop off at junction 63 on the a1,pick up my clip together trailer and put it in the back of your car ,then clip it together when you get there.put bike on then bring it back up to here co durham ,then ride the rest of the way .all it will cost you is a crate of budweiser .

fizzer what an exceptionally decent offer, thanks. i am just going to ride it up though. looking forward to it, not been on a bike since i took my airhead apart last year. i was never particularly worried about it, just wanted a heads up in case there was anything crucial, particular to these bikes, that i should watch out for. im happy just to get on with it now

littledumptruck my dad will be driving the car, me on the bike 
Twice now I've flown up to Edinburgh, checked out the bikes ( 100PD and an 1100GS) and rode them back to Leicester.... both got me home without any drama.... Just have a good look around the bike before you get on it
