Thinking of getting a Harley

Thanks mutley the 48 is the one I like :drool but don't like the riding position much
And 2 gallon tank :blast
I'll have to see what it's like to ride
I really love the 883 iron in blue but riding an iron :augie

Don't usually post here, but if you get a sportster you'll want one of the big engined Harleys after a while, so have a test ride on one of them too

Oh, dear. Another "review" from someone who has never owned one, but has read all about them from the boys at MCN.

Oh dear another misguided assumption from someone who dosent know me:comfort, I am speaking from experience, I do own one, Street Bob stage two 1690:pullface Out of the box they are slow have crap brakes and dont handle particularly well, i stand by my statement.

I like the retro bobber look of the sportster 48

We're love those..................... :bounce1

i've been contemplating selling off a couple of my BM collection to fund getting a used one. There's been a couple pop on on ebay at "reasonable" prices (compared to new) but they don't hang about very long.

Buy an older Sporty and build a replica..?:D

went for a ride on this nightster today
hated the first 10 mins then got into the swing of it :D
seat killed my arse though and way too quiet :augie
still on the edge though

If you buy a sportster you will only start hankering for big twin, so you may as well buy the mans version straight away and avoid all the angst.

Any yes i've owned both types in the past:rolleyes:

I'm not keen on the big ones
I love the stripped look but couldn't live with a 2 gallon tank
So a nightster has the black rims and larger tank compromise
But it didn't inspire me to part with my cash just kept thinking I could by a good bike for that much money :augie

Second hand street bob.. bobs your uncle!!.. You can get a good one for 7-8k
Proper engine too

If you are willing to buy old enough and high enough mileage you can get almost anything for the price of a new sporty :nenau

The problem is it isn't new and it isn't a sporty, especially a 48 :blast

If that's what floats ya boat then buy one and run it for the summer. It'll be worth most of what you paid for it next year and you'll have scratched the itch :cool

Well done for going for it.

I have owned the Street bob which I thought was great, currently on an 883 sporty, which is also great in a tamer way.

Maybe not the best for everything but at least they have some character.

Mutley, are they "different" bikes, or just different paint jobs?

oh, that would cover their entire range then.:hide

Where did you get the 2 gallon tank idea from, sportsters have had a 3 gallon tank for years :friday

Quit like the idea of the softtail slim, nice bars, big frame, footboards, black rimed spoke wheels and what look like fatboy forks.

Looks nice on paper:nenau

Mutley, are they "different" bikes, or just different paint jobs?

Essentially they are both just 1200 Sportsters, same engine / gearbox / frame. The difference is in the tank / seat / bars / wheels and all the ancillary parts. If you see them in the flesh parked side by side they look very similar but the '48 is just a bit cooler :cool

oh, that would cover their entire range then.:hide

It's no secret that HD repackage their engine and frame combinations to produce different bikes however they do have 6 different engines and 6 different frames so it is a little more than 'paint jobs'. :nenau

Of course they then do the legendary range of choice in finish before you start with the factory options / aftermarket options, and all before they then get properly customised. Often not even the bike in the dealer is standard. Sometimes you can't tell what the original bike started out as

Makes a change from the panzer battalions all lined up and identifiable only by the different screen eh? :P

I've test ridden a few at the Southampton dealership. Still can't bring myself to cross that final bridge though. I'm always shocked at the condition of the fastenings on their test bikes.

I was there a while ago, my tyre kicking mate was making cluck noises about buying one, and taking up the time of the sales guy, getting quotes. what got me was the price of the stage one kit to "release" some power and make them louder. My mate just nodded his head, I asked exactly what it did. Seems to release a meagre amount of extra power,( and drop the mpg.!) seems mostly based on the noise output. Even the sales guy agreed.:blast Each to their own I guess.

My mate is trying to sell this at the moment, i think he might be dreaming?

Eliminator I am in exactly that position
Not impressed enough to spend money on a bike that needs money spending on it to improve it just to solve the issues it has just to ride a Harley
Ill keep looking see if one takes my fancy though it's an itch that may need scratching one day

i bought this for £5k.... to scratch that itch..... having a real laugh with it..... i could not justify the 18k price tag of a new un......also its rusty enough not to have to worry too much about cleaning it!!
