Thinking of getting a Harley

Quit like the idea of the softtail slim, nice bars, big frame, footboards, black rimed spoke wheels and what look like fatboy forks.

Looks nice on paper:nenau

Agreed, best looking bike they've brought out in ages IMHO. If my NightTrain had looked like that I'd probably still have it.

i bought this for £5k.... to scratch that itch..... having a real laugh with it..... i could not justify the 18k price tag of a new un......also its rusty enough not to have to worry too much about cleaning it!!

You've got it dead right there Richard :thumb2

New tyres, air in the suspension, full fliud change.....Single seat, no sissy bar... whippy ariel cut down...foot board relocation brackets from "Wild Bills" various bits and bobs removed/sawn off....

oh, and most importantly high way pegs...

runs like a dream and even goes round corners (sort of)....

Where are the pics then? We need to see the transition :D

I don't have any new ones...:blast
Still in "WIP" ...... next job is to get the seat re-covered in plan black leather … (I have to lose the chuffing studs) so I can sit further back..... I’m also going to get some Softail forwards modded to fit the frame, I can then lose the forward crash bars.... I also plan to remove the rubber "bumpers" and various chrome bars from the front and rear mudguards....may try and source a second hand fender set as I would like to cut them around a bit!! Will also look to remove heat shields and "wrap" the exhaust headers, or paint them Matt Black… (Stove paint) ... ... I need to replace the inner fairing as it’s cracked, I have a spare from the previous owner but it’s a "messy" job..... During this phase I will strip and service the forks, get the chrome bits painted black plus the wheels...and two inch higher bars…….( if I can afford them s/h Harrison Billet brakes)
The bodywork is likely to end up Black Denim…….. With modern raised HD logos…. Like on the Street Bob….
I do not have too much chrome on the engine but it needs to go… I want just plan wet sanded aluminium ….. So I need to source S/H parts or remove mine and find somebody that can de-chrome!
But…. I’m going to ride it for this summer, see how it all hangs together and then start the next phase from October!!....

That is actually rather nice!!! :beerjug:

what got me was the price of the stage one kit to "release" some power and make them louder. My mate just nodded his head, I asked exactly what it did. Seems to release a meagre amount of extra power,( and drop the mpg.!) seems mostly based on the noise output. Even the sales guy agreed.:blast Each to their own I guess.

Eliminator I am in exactly that position
Not impressed enough to spend money on a bike that needs money spending on it to improve it just to solve the issues it has just to ride a Harley
Ill keep looking see if one takes my fancy though it's an itch that may need scratching one day

Harley tuning, just say no ;)

If you don't want to alter it then don't :nenau

My Glide has the loudest set of Screamin' Eahle pipes I've ever heard. They give me a headache, totally inappropriate to the bike's purpose. I'm looking for a way to quieten it without losing performance. :blast

The standard bikes perform perfectly well. The Stage 1 myth came from a time when all HDs came out of the factory with California State emission restrictions in place, and it was a really cheap way of releasing horsepower and making the bike run more smoothly. The modern bikes don't need it as they are all fuel injected and there is a European fuel map.

Stage 1 is a very nice way for the stealers to release another £1,500 when you are in a spending mode. They also stock a very narrow range of pipes and filters, you can spot a bike that has had a main dealer tune a mile off. It's not possible to save a huge amount of money on a stage 1 but it is possible to avoid looking like a lemming :toungincheek

Anyway, those of us with any sense buy low mileage second hand from the Hoggies who have already taken the hit on depreciation and Stage 1 tuning :green gri

Noisey pipes :blast

That's the first thing i did on my bike after riding it home from coventry, where i bought it. Removed the loud pointless pipes and fitted a set of nice and calm pipes.
Can't honestly say i've noticed one jot of difference in any so called "performance"

I felt a right prick sitting at traffic lights on such a loud bike while every fecker was thinking "WTF look at that twat" .
They most probably still think "look at that twat", but without the offending noise.

I agree ........

...they probably do

If anybody is thinking of a Harley I have this '93 1200 XLH Sportster, stage 1, sports coil, Bad Dog Exhausts (not superloud but nicer than stock) new gel battery, new Venoms, solo and dual seat, Harley leather saddlebags and frames, backrest + other goodies. Been on SORN last two years, less than 11K miles. I've all the old MOT's and receipts.
Looking to swap for a BM. I already have an F650 and have just begun restoring a '77 R60/7.
Just thinking of being a one marque man.
Anyway here's a pic. If you would like more or more info, let me know.

Woops - just discovered I can't post attachments! I'll send pics to anyone who might be interested whilst I try and figure this out.

Bad boy, you need to be a subscriber to post attachments and use the FS&W section. A no no on your first post, consider your wrist slapped :rob

I'm truly sorry and am very ashamed, my apologies.
Owned my first BMW in 1967 so I'm practically senile.
Still miss my 1988 1000 GS. Sold to buy the childrens' food and clothing.
I shall go away now and study to be better.
Robin.

..... and save to pay your subs of course..... ;)

By the way Mutley, (and whoever else is interested), I think V&M have a range of touring exhausts that breath much easier and have a more mellow and quieter sound.

Well I didn't go to the pub last night so saved enough to join today. :hide
