This doesn’t look good…

Have we got a how-to for this job ? I thought Steptoe did one years ago ?

I’ll repeat what I said above,
What was good advice 15 years ago might not now be the case,
If you have bearing failure on a final drive, the other bearings may well need attention.
If you are not in a position to check them properly either due to lack of tools or confidence get someone qualified to do so..
Best case scenario of a collapse of the pinion nose bearing is a scrap fd.
Worst case ,the thing will lock up.

I’ll get some pics of a 1200 one tomorrow that shat it’s pinion bearing

Stand by for another sector of the forum fretting!

Seriously though it's only through sharing this info that we learn our various bikes' likely maintenance requirements and can elect to take preventative action. Good stuff. :thumb

I’m not looking to getting into scaremongering,:thumby:
I specialise in transmission repairs so I get to see the good, the bad,and the ugly.
A decent maintenance regime will spot transmission problems long before they self destruct..
This was off a 17k mile 1200,the bike was mint with full dealer history.(make of that what you will)

In the process of building up a spare final drive for my 1999 r1150gs , I have a nos casing that I bought 12 years ago a full set of internals from an undamaged final drive that did 20,000 miles.

Will now be doing the pillion input bearing and the input seal, the bearings on both side of the crown wheel along with the seals, although a bit shocked at the parts prices compared with when I had rebuilds done on my last 1150.

Indeed,it starts to get a bit pricey,
But if it only needs attention every 20 years or so it’s no big deal:thumb

Same here, Neil, but without having to build it… I’ve spent 22yrs building up a stock of spare parts for my 2000 model and have a spare, fully built, final drive and a spare low mileage gearbox. I’ve also got a couple of fuel tanks, a set of standard wheels, seats, a few screens, 2 pairs of handlebars, a fork slider, a pair of cylinder heads, a pair of throttle bodies, various exhausts and a selection of pannier parts. I just can’t resist a bargain…:D

Would one of them be Mandarin by any chance - and for sale? (not sunny yellow)

Happy day are here again… la,la,laa,la,laa,la,laa, lala.

Parts arrived in the week so I set aside some time, put the crown wheel in the freezer and put the oven on when the Wife went out to do the shopping

Bearings both measured and matched the originals for size so I’ve gone with the original shims and everything has gone back together perfectly. Road tested and gave it some punishment for being so naughty last time. Hard acceleration and dropping down a couple of gears on the overrun gave it a good workout and it feels lovely again.
