Take a look at this..

I removed the wheel for a look, and i saw this..

Theres also a bit of play at the rear wheel, but I was advised by an independant expert, that a bit of play is normal on the R1150GS...

What's the verdict then and how much is it going to cost to correct..

any recommendations, I've only had the bike a few weeks (long enough to replace the final drive oil, there wasn't a lot that drained out of it!) so I suspect that the faults been there a while perhaps not detected by previous owner..

cheers triton.

There is only 250 ml in the final drive. Cost to replace the seal and bearing depends on if dealer or independent, parts not a lot about £60

Steptoe will advise better than me.

All depends on what it needs, I would get a new seal from one of our parts dealers maybe Steptoe on here or sherlocks in devon, this will probably cost about £5 for the seal and £1.50 post, then you could carefully insert a tool like a screwdriver past the lip of the old seal and prise it out, then give the spigot (if there is a fairly deep groove worn into the spigot where the seal lip runs then just fitting a new seal probably wont work) and the seal housing a good wipe clean, lube the new seal and gently tap it evenly home, wipe round and job done. take care not to damage the spigot were the seal runs as you insert and prise out the old one otherwise you will need a new one even if you didnt to start with.

The above assumes you have a certain amount of mechanical confidence, if you are able to do this there is a fair chance that the price of the seal is all it will cost you.

I am of course open to correction from anybody who has tried and failed in this operation.

1st - there shouldn't be any play in the rear wheel .

2nd - if the play is in the rear bevel, this can cause the seal to leak, so by just replacing the seal may not solve the problem .

3rd - if the play is in the rear bevel, and it's that thats made the seal leak, your crown wheel bearing is fecked, and needs to be replaced rather sharpish, before it collapses, causing other damage .

4th - if it's just the seal leaking, pull the old one out, and replace with a new one .

5th - You're not supposed to lubricate the wheel nuts. They should be dry, just like on a car. :mmmm

Thanks folks,

I'm going to run it past the local BMW shop..

depending on what the say and the costs.. I may well be in touch again.

Neil, if I was to courior the back assembly to you, is this something you could do, and send back?

I'm wondering if it's worth while just biting the bullit and just changing the bearings anyway...

and thanks for the tip, I'll get my nut's degreased shortly :D

I replaced the bearings in mine, think there were about £30 and the seals about £8 took the bevel box into Motorad Central and they put the seal in FOC :thumb
