Thought I would do a r1150 gs rallye as BMW forgot to do one

Yes powder coated but before that process shotblastered, primed then the red powder coat.

The engine is a lot more work, it's about taking as much off as possible without taking the engine out, my rule is if you can see it paint it, if you can't still paint it that way when it's put back together you will not see anything missed, it's about getting the colour as close to original as possible,

Just to point out when I started to do this project I wasn't looking for a nut and bolt restoration I was only looking at rebuilding a bike that would take me across Russia but at the same time have a bit fun,

Doing a project like this it would be stupid to not change out items that look near its sell by date and of course change nuts and bolts.

The last two nights I've managed about two hours in the work shop, in that time I've remove the front tele lever and the down pipes prepared one side of the engine, its slow but heading in the right direction, its so easy to come home have your tea put your feet up, and say I'll do it tomorrow, then it gets put on the shelf,
the key is to enjoy what you are doing, if you want to spend a full day or five minutes working on the bike that's fine, sometime you need to do that.

I'll put two photos of each side of the engine to show one side done and prepped the other isn't you divide which is which. Sorry about the quality of the photos but its was late last night and I couldn't be arsed with a light

Now for the seat, I've now decided on the colours of the seat, I emailed a guy on eBay who told me he can make a seat cover to any design and colour I liked, after emailing each other for the past five day we came up with what I think would be the perfect rallye seat,

I will post a picture of what we decided tonight

Not quite the same as I was looking for,,,,, where's the exhaust,,,, it's an adventure with a red rear rack no exhaust

It's an 1150, if you use the standard catalyst it doesn't need a back box, just a stubby to point the exhaust gases away from the bike as per the image above. (That top box should go though, you could bury a small adult in that monstrosity.) Full size pannier, narrower profile for a given luggage capacity, or no box to burn your soft luggage if that's the route you're going. Saves around 7-8Kgs dumping the standard silencer.

Garage

Hi

Just curious is your garage heated during your night time periods working on the bike or are you just hardy types up north !!, bloody freezing down here my garage has no heating and I would not fancy an evening turning bolts.

When I want to work on a bike I change into my vest top, shorts and sandals then build a roof over the parking bay. Next I shovel out the worst of the snow and ice, get a nice cold beer, and start work. Try not to work too fast as I might overheat and the laundry maid hates dealing with sweaty clothes.

Heated garage whats that,,,,,,, it's a work shop at the the bottom of the garden, its a labour of love,,:thumb

Please some one put the picture right

I thought as I will be taking the seat apart may as well install heated seat

Use it in the wet and your Gore Tex will migrate the water into your skiddies instead of the other way. See posts on Gore Tex gloves leaking with heated grips switched on.

Well I've had the engine painted and lacquered today I'll have to say that I wished I'd spent a bit more time on the prep work but it's done now so I will live with it, maybe I will change the front engine cover for a new one at some point (had a chance of a GSA front section but not sure if that fitted) the paint came out ok just the front cover has a few battle scars,

The tele lever and forks came out good, where the guy tried to paint them in red primer then silver paint the red came through so I sanded them down back to metal before I painted them,

Just had enough time today to put the front back together, tomorrow I will put the exhaust on, engine bars, clean wheels, then maybe paint centre stand, side stand,

Looking at stripping brakes callipers next week, need to order some parts from motorworks, fuel line connectors male female, I'm after two of each if any one got some for sale
