Now, I know they look really cool ( Love the wire ones from TT ) - however, are they necessary / advisable? In all the years I have been riding I have never had a cracked headlight or know anyone else who has.

I am venturing off to Morocco with Mr Fanum and was wondering whether to spend the £62  on the bit if wire trellis ?

Any helpful thoughts / comments gents?

On my PAN I have one of those perspex headlight protectors. Can't remember how much it cost, probably about 20 quid. That has a crack in it now which would have been the headlight. I hate to think how much a new one is. I had a glass go on my K some years ago, the glass wasn't expensive but the labour was horrendous to take everything apart to fit it.

Personally I think some protection is worth it. These things usually break in the dark, on holiday, or miles from a dealer!

Trellis looks good and it is fair to say you would have to be very unlucky for it to allow a stone through. Lexan/Perspex type give full protection, are usually cheaper and are less intrusive.

I have a few marks on mine so it has worked :thumb

Had to replace my headlight four years ago - expensive (and days of riding lost). Have the TT protector now and it works and looks great.:) A small "but" or two - consider this: Wire will make shadows, some use this as an argument for plexi protection... With the TT protector fairly easy to clean HL with a hose, but some units can be flipped down/out of the way or removed easily. This is conveniant for wire type, but an absolute must for plexi - or you will not be able to clean HL easily enroute, and well:augie

Ive got the perspex ones fitted to my 1150 gsa, i do a fair bit of off-road on that bike i do believe they have saved my lights on more than one occasion.

Wish I had put one on the CRF , rding past the local golf course last tuesday and got hit right in the middle of the lens . One knackered headlight !!!!!

If you're concerned about protecting your headlight you may also wish to consider protecting the oil cooler.

I use one of these.
