Having had a 1150GS for the last year and carrying out the 12K and 18K services I now feel that I would like to take on something that I haven't had the courage to do and that is the synchronizing of the throttle body. The bike is running well but I'd like to check it for peace of mind as by rights it should have been carried out when I did the previous 2 services.

I have gleaned much good info off this excellent site and feel that I now have the ability to do it (fingers crossed). What I'd like to know is what type of balancer should I use? I have only seen 2 mentioned on this site: Twinmax or a Carbtune.

Could anyone offer some advice.

Most on here seem to favour Twinmax, but I get great results with the good old-fashioned Davida (?) Vacuum Gauge set-up. Quick, easy and only paid £20 for them.

Everyone to their own!

Just to complete the trio and to completely confuse you, I bought a Twinmax from Calamander and had good results curing surging!
How long is a piece of string?

Graham, the best solution is to find someone living near you that has either or both and go and check out the instruments in a real world setting.

I've used the carbtune on a 6 month trip whilst away and when I came back home I decided to get said instrument but I didn't have enough money, so I built my own system which was accurate but fiddly.

Then one day I heard about the Twinmax just as I had the money and decided on an impulse to purchase one.

It was more or less one of my better investments and is now an invaluable aid to maintaining a well running machine.

Having used both, I think both are equaly good and only require the user to work to an exacting standard to get the best out of them. I do however think that the TwinMax would be the best of the two, just.

The TwinMAx does have the advantage of being able to tune a V8 or any machine with as many cylinders as you like, very easily. I know this as I've done a hot V12 for a local fella who recently purchased a V12 and his vacuum gauge set-up, only goes to 8 cylinders. It took about half an hour from start to finish.

Fellas, thanks for all your advice. I have bitten the bullet and gone and got a Carbtune. Followed all the instructions and got on just fine. I now have a smooth running 1150.
