on the Throttle Body - been told that if you adjust the tickover type scews at all, then the TB's need to be returned to the factory to be re-set? Is this true?

I service both our 1150's, my DR-Z & my girlfriends DR350 & have a fair idea of spannering experience.

Can't remember why but last June I adjusted the equivalent of the tickover screws on the both throttle bodies of my g/f's 1150. I think I'd made a mistake when replacing her tank but not the usual "cable not seated" error but bike still ran crap?

Anyway, once I'd realised my mistake, I slackened off both cable adjusters, balanced the TB's using the tickover screws and a Morgan Carbtune, then final adjustment using the brass airscrews before adjusting the cables themselves @ 3,000rpm. Bike's ran fine ever since, fuel economy is as good as it ever was, no surging and has since required another service already due to the mileage.

The tickover on my 1150 has always been a little high (1,300 to 1,450rpm), I've tried adjusting it out using the brass airscrews but only succeeded in leaning the mixture right out. I'm thinking of slackening the cables, backing off the tickover screws & then balancing the TB's as normal - anyone know of a reason why this should not attempted?

Note that I was only told about not touching the tickover screws until after I'd adjusted those on my g/f's bike.

Thanks in advance

Steve

By the tick over screws do you mean the throttle stop screws that the cable cam rest's against whenthe throttle is closed ?

If this is what you mean, I upset my R1100 TB's a while back and had to reset the whole TB's from scratch including these screws, basically as long as you only adjust them a small amount and don't let the butterfly's close completely I don't see you getting into any real problems

-check your valve clearance first
-then check that the small O-Rings and the throttle take off covers are in good condition and provide a tight seal also the butterfly shafts are sealing good as well
- there also a good write up on Advrider hall of wisdom, see the links page for directions on how to set up your TPS voltage check that as well
if all off the above is good, then adjust the throttle stops a small amount then rebalance till you the idle within limits

worst case scenario is the butterflys are held open and you won't be able to adjust the idle via the Big Brass Screws or they'll be closed too much again you won't have good adjustment of the idle via the BBS

Since you don't seem to be to far off, I wouldn't have thought your adjustmens are that far out.

PS make sure you have a couple of fans to cool the engine down while your doing this.

from memory, you need to slacken the cables & adjust the stops so that both butterflies are closed. attach a meter to the most rearward wire (red white?) on the TPS & earth. set base position of the TPS to 0.06v (i'd check that too, depends who you ask) wind L/H stop in, opening butterfly until you reach 0.360 to 0,385v (and that).

start engine and synch R/H butterfly to left.

adjust cables.

sorry, memory a bit hazy on the details but that's the gist of it. doesn't take long.

Throttle stop screws are set at the factory on a flow bench and can be a b4st4rd to reset if you lose the adjustment.
