how long is it likely to take its 200 ish miles but unsure of the first bit (never been that far north....)

how bad/good is the bit from inverness

Can't answer it all, but most of it isn't dual carriageway. And that's just the bit between Inverness and Perth - north of Inverness, the first few miles is dual, the rest (I think) is all single.

The section between Inverness and Perth is mostly single, with a few stretches of dual at intervals. Despite having been up and down this road quite a few times, I've never counted how many bits of dual there are, nor have I measured how long they are.

Time for the trip? No idea, but I'd start with Google Maps for directions, and their time estimate will probably be longer than it will take you to do the trip.

Which is probably of little help to you.

As for Perth to Troon, it's all a mixture of dual carriageway and motorway, although there's a section near Cumbernauld which is about 10 - 12 miles of roadworks with 40mph average speed cameras on it, due to finish about September this year.

Forgot to mention, the best bit is probably Thurso to Inverness, it will keep you on your toes.

Thurso to Perth is shown on Autoroute as just under 4 hours which is about right.... I used to manage that journey in an Artic truck before a break was needed (4.5 Hours)...

93-ish miles to Troon from Perth...easy-peasy 90 minutes..

No Dual carraigeway north of Inverness , apart from the run up to Kessock bridge. The A9's a good bike road from Thurso down to Tain then it gets boring.
Dual cabbageway for big lumps South of Inverness (with bigger lumps of single) all the way to Perth.

At car speeds allow 2 hours Thurso to Inverness and 1 1/2 hours Snecky to Perth.

But....

If you want a better ride down (and time isn't an issue) head West from Thurso and head down to Bonar bridge via Altnaharra and Lairg, then back road (B9176) over the hill to Alness and pick up the boring A9.

A9 South of Inverness for 20 miles then tun off for CarrBridge and Speybridge, then down to Tomintoul, Braemar, past Blacklooneys for Blairgowrie and Perth.

In that case make sure you follow the back (coast) road from Ullapool to Lochinver via Inverkaig and from Lochinver back to the main road just south of Kylesku via Drumbeg

ps did thurso to manchester in less than 7 hours 20........

apart from a 40mph crawl for 5 miles near brora cos of juice issues

and a stop in perth for a brew for half an hour
