Can you really adjust the front wheel bearings on these? Or do you mean steering head bearings?

SAcrilege!
Thank you Rob, I never knew that taper rollers were used on them. I read some(!) of the link and it said that they were changed for ball races after 1984, mine are definitely ball and it's a 1982 model. Perhaps the US models were different? The shimming is critical on these get it too loose or too tight and the bearings wear rapidly. http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/section4.htm
As you say, there's an awful lot to read in the link, but no diagrams, do you happen to have a link to a relevant picture or diagram?

That makes complete sense to me, surely the accuracy of bearings is far greater than our ability to measure them in a workshop environment?I recall a big argument as to whether you should need to change the shims when replacing bearings as they should be accurate - its the hub thats not.

Off for an Expensive respray tomorrow. I decided I didn't like the Gold after all so I'm going for another scheme.
Reckon I'm going to sell the bike when it's done. Lovely machine but just not my thing. So if anybody wants a nice RS and has a Triumph of some sort for sale get in touch.
