Why do people enthuse so much about these , when surely they only give you a benefit for the 2% of time you ride off road ... And then a disadvantage when you ride on the road ...

Is it fashion, or am I missing something?

Yes you are missing something, once they are on your off road rate will increase substantially and they are still pretty good on road anyway.

Great for winter road riding. Water displacement v good and confidence inspiring when riding on rough roads :)

Put it this way.......

My 1st year at the TT on my 1150 was on TKC's & they were amazing. Especially good, was the look on the faces of some people I'd passed, when I pulled over in Ramsey & they saw the knobblies. Priceless......

You do need to get used to them, though.

I did 35000 miles on Tourances and loved them. Then I switched to TKC and swear that they are actually better on-road, allowing me to get the bike down much better. However, now I can go off road whenever I want to - something that I couldn't do on Tourances with any degree of confidence. I agree that they take a little getting used to - about 10 minutes in my case :D

They also might work out a little more expensive. I used to pay £156 for Tourances and my first pair of TKCs cost £126 (both ride-in ride-out at F&B in Sandbach) but the rear TKC only lasts to 4000 miles instead of 7000 for the Tourance. However, I now have a pack of three from Vern for £170 and my local garage just fitted a new rear for just £15 (or £10 to a loose wheel)

As has been said, TKCs have plenty of grip for road riding. But what they lack slightly is the precision of a proper road tyre. Especially on new tyres, when the knobbles are big and have square edges, the bike tends to meander about a little. Not enough to be at all dangerous - just enough to notice when you're cracking on.

Had mine on now for a couple of hundred miles after 40KMiles on the GS with road tyres...

I brought them because the look cool
I like them because they look cool and the handle OK on the tarmac

I've also done some great greenlane, taken to wearing an open face helmet and I'm thinking about taking the creen off.

There you are Pieman - the definitive answer! Ewan Mcgregor has a lot to answer for!!!

Wrong wrong wrong...

It's not Ewan... the girls like Charley, it's all Charley's doing.

But all this aside... They are rather good tyres and they will tempt you offroad and that's great fun.... and cool:D

To put them into context - I was on the BMW Enduro training at Hechlingen recently and one of the guys with us managed to get his knee down on asphalt on a GSA on TKC80s - several times. He was actual scraping his boots and he was so amazed because he had never managed this before on a GS....in fact on any other bike if I undertood him correctly. He usually rides on Anakees but the GS's at Hechlingen are all TKC shod obviously for the off road course. They may not give the distance of Tourances but if you have any off road aspirations they are the only way to go and they are excllent on asphalt too.....no compromise only durability.

ISTR that TKC's arre made using one of Continental's softest rubber compounds, hence the good grip/stability, but relatively short life.

I only changed because of the alloys being fitted & because I decided to stop taking the 1150 off-road.

where then??

So i've read all the blurb about TKCs and as ive got a spare pair of wheels im having powder coated black for the winter, i need to find out where is the cheapest place to get a pair from in the UK? My local tyre place want £146 a pair.is that about right?

Cheers,Goose.

:D :D :D

And then a disadvantage when you ride on the road ...

Id have thought that until I followed Mr Ifan around the Peak district on Sunday.

Especially interesting was a 90 mph sweeper that I was 'concerned' about and I was on BT020's. TKC didn't seem to make any significant difference to the cornering performance.

I certainly couldn't have gone around some of the bends any faster on my road tyres. Fekkin loon:D

TKC's are old hat... you need Heidenaus!!! I'm currently 3700 miles up on my rear which, for those that know of my tyre wear rate, is a personal best. And, best of all, there's still a whole load of tread left too!!!
And the coup de grace???? They're so cheap even a Yorkshireman will buy them!!!:D
