Tom Tom fitting

I have now been trying to get my Tom Tom wired into my bike for the last 4 weeks in all. I did what I thought was the best thing to do was and asked The BMW dealer to fit it, which they did,only not correctly. Now I know I am not an electrician , but I do know a positive wire from a negative. Apparently they do not.
My Tom Tom charger is now on it's way back to me for the second time, hopefully this time , all will go well. I am hoping the wiring problem is the cause.
The tom tom was wired into the wiring loom for the bmw sat nav. One dealer said that on his own bike he had connected the wires straight to the battery through a fuse.
Any ideas would be greatly recieved. Tom tom have been helpful in trying to identify the problem , so here's hoping

My TTRider is connected to the cables that supply the accessory socket, which seems to be the best supply point(I think).
With the reliability & design problems of the TomTom Rider you'll have lots of chances to change the installation.
I'm on my 3rd charging "shoe" & the main unit has now the standard feature of badly worn contacts.

Wire it directly to the battery with an in line fuse. I have had no probs with that. Other alternatives (behind accessory socket etc) all have some problem or other involving the can bus system/powering off etc

I have had no reliability problems with my Tom Tom and have found it excellent. I did buy the better bracket from Nippys to stop it vibrating and potentailly flying off

I agree if you are going to use a Tomtom Rider don't rely on the supplied mounting, it's poor and will let you down.

As I believe that it doesn't draw very much current and after checking out a couple of sites I settled for taking a live feed from the side/parking light and then connected the earth cable to the frame. It has been working fine for me for about three months now and I have the added benefit that the TT only charges when the ignition is on.

Hi, had my TT wired by Southport Superbikes using the wire supplied with TT, mounted on a Motorrad mount which utilises original TT cradle- bought a securing strap from this site to overcome cradle problems- so far (2100 miles) no problems.

Down to wiring

After many wasted hours , the problem has now been solved. It would appear that BMW Battersea don't know the live from a neutral wire. Having swapped the wires around and fitting the newly returned charger , every thing is now working . Tom Tom were really good at swapping the bits and both times I had to return bits they were back within two days. Brill. I will now be taking my trade to BMW in Tonbridge. Has anyone tried this new BMW dealer yet. Just about to fit a hugger. The extended carbon fibre one from Wanderlich. I will let you know what I think.

Not tried the new Coopers at Tonbridge but its a flash showroom. I use South London Motorcycles in Caterham, which from Dartford should be about the same distance.

Very friendly and helpful staff and have always found the service very good. Much better coffee shop than Coopers as well. I often drop in for a chat, coffee and sandwich over weekend.

They also have the occasional rideout and have had staff/customer get togethers, drinks at Christmas, great free barbeques when new models are launched and even staff/customer restaurant night outs. When my wife passed her test last year all the staff came out and applauded. This what all dealers should be like.,

Still wasting my time

Ok I know you told me so , My Tom Tom is now wired direct to the battery with an in line fuse. The BMW loom connection decided to drain the battery if it was left for a few days. Any Ideas , I can't be bothered to take it back to BMW Battersea and waste another day and as it is now working I shall leave things alone.

use a fly lead,

Heres what I did fittng my Garmin Zumo....

I already have a permanent lead from the battery to a socket for my Optimate...(essential equipment)

So I took the power lead form teh Garmin to where the socket for the Optimate is and put a Tamiya plug (99p for 2 from your local model shop) on the garmin lead and plugged it into the socket. Its fused already and you wont have the cherger plugged in at teh same time as your sat nav (or at least its gonna make a mess if you do.....)
