best to stick it in the for sale section, should sell quickly:thumb

It was 12 December 2006 that I took the mount back to my local Halfords and I am still waiting for a replacement. I have been promised a new mount but so far nothing has appeared. Halfords blaming TomTom for the delay. If it was not for the fact that I like the way the unit works in the car, and have added databases, I would dump the whole lot back at Halfords and demand a refund. I am an eternal optomist and think that the reason for the delay is that Tomtom are producing a new mount without the flaws and I will be getting one of those. I also believe in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy.

I think you'll find it's TomTom R&D that are figments of our imagination. Everyone knows that Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy live together :D

Maybe Tomtom will add an audio output interface connector (2.5mm/3.5mm jack? )or allow other bluetooth devices to carry the audio rather than the default 'tomtom only' bluetooth adapter.

The unit is a couple of years old now, and faces some stiff competition from the new Zumo models.

Didn't the tooth fairy give birth to a flying pig after having an affair with Santa ??

Joined this forum to add my name to the growing list of people having the same problem with the rider. After receiving 2 new docking shoes from Tomtom and reading this forum I realised that the contacts on the back of the unit should not have holes in them. Last week I sent a photo of the back of the unit to the support centre who told me to return it and a replacement would be sent out asap. This arrived today - MY ORIGINAL UNIT WITH A NOTE SAYING NO FAULT FOUND AND ANOTHER DOCKING SHOE (3rd now). How can they say there is no fault when the contacts are so obviously damaged? I suspect that somebody at the repair centre in Scotland just turned it on without looking at the report - it works until you put it on the bike and charges when it feels like it. I have upgraded to the 6.5 version which does stop it switching off when riding.
Email sent again to Tomtom and waiting another reply.

Just been back to Halfords to find out when I can expect a replacement cradle. Tomtom won't supply Halfords with a replacement till they get the other one back. Sent it off today and await developments. Interestingly the Halfords manager said he would have given me a replacement out of stock units however TTR is now a "DISCONTINUED LINE" and he will not be getting any more in stock. He does not know if this is because Tomtom have discontinued it or Halfords have got fed up with complaints about it.

One of my collegues at work has just bought a TTR from Halfords (I didnt know he was doing it:( ). He was told that it was the last one, and that they wouldnt be getting anymore. Got it for a good price though.

I have just sent the following to Halfords customer service and await a reply.

"I am currently waiting for a replacement cradle for my Tomtom Rider GPS. My local store are being very helpful and trying all avenues to help me out but seem to be thwarted by Tomtom with the result that it is now a month since I took the cradle back and I still don't have a replacement. I am confident that I will eventually get a replacement but far less confident that it will be any better than the first one that was broken before it even came out of the box.

My purpose in emailing yourselves is to invite you to survey just how many broken cradles for this particular unit have been returned to your stores or found damaged by your staff before they were sold.

The attached link gives a very good flavour of how this particular issue is playing out amongst the biking community. Tomtom appear to be burying their heads in the sand and offloading the units with this particular cradle at a discount through yourelves when they must know there is a design fault. They won't listen to individual customers but I am guessing that Halfords must sell more of their product in the UK than any other retailer. Can I invite you to further enhance your company's reputation by putting your buying power pressure to good use and urge Tomtom to recall these cradles and replace them with one that is fit for purpose.

The GPS itself is great and I would not like to part with it but Tomtom's reputation is being ruined by a component that probably has a cost price value less than £10"

Hi,

Not much to add other than I've had my TTR about ten months. I have had the mount replaced 3 times. I had to buy the first replacment as TT stated the fault was not covered under the warranty!! :spitfire The shoe split in two. Anyhow the last time the TTR went in they replaced the damaged pins and replaced the mount.

Am I now safe? Or is it going to fail again? 2 months warranty left!!

Anyone contacted BBC Watchdog? Just be nice to get their "No known faults" attitude plastered all over the UK.

I just did!...see if I get a reply but if I do I will need pictures etc and a list of people. :)

I have photos of the cracked mount in the condidtion it was as it came out of the box from Halfords. The other 2 brand new ones in the store when I went back the following day were worse. No photos of those unfortunately.

It would be nice to see them make an official comment or embarrassing public denial, however I suspect that they would decline and just issue a statement that they are 'looking into it' or something patronising like that.

If they care so little after taking everyones hard earned cash, they probably don't intend to stay loyal to bike GPS systems when cars are the major market.

We need somebody with big buying power for car systems like Halfords fighting our corner with Tomtom. Anybody who bought their system from a Halfords store should email their customer relations dept. and tell them of your feelings about Tomtom service

Me too

I've returned my second TT Rider back to Fife service centre today due to the charging problem.

I bought it new from Dixons about a year ago (at the full whack £500 launch price) and then bought Western Europe maps in August (before they revamped em in the Autumn...).

My original unit wouldn't charge on the bike straight out of the box, so TT customer service sent me a new cable. That didn't help, so I ended up swapping for a new boxed unit from Dixons.

7,000 miles later, my replacement unit has packed up charging on bike due to the cradle issue, so the Rider & cradle are on their way back to TT. I'm expecting an additional bunfight, as of course I couldn't find the receipt so I've not included the required proof of purchase - watch this space...

I really don't feel like laying out another £125 for the Touratech locking mount - apparently they've discontinued the cheaper one. If I didn't have all this money tied up in it I'd be harrassing Garmin for a European ETA for the new Zumo 450 (same memory as 550, but no bluetooth).

New improved TTR is coming ..

I've heard (reliable info) that a new improved TT Rider is coming soon, its has new a cradle (old version is ditched was words used) and lots ball attachment parts in the box.

Not sure if new TTR cradle is compatible with old, but watch for manufacturer's announcement.

Pic's

Hi I am new to this forum just joined after following this thread since I bought my TT rider on the 23/01/07 with indeed a broken cradle (a pity I did not find the site before). I have written to TT and await their reply.

The unit its self seems to me to be brilliant let down by the cradle. I don’t know now whether to send the complete kit back for refund and wait for the new unit if indeed this does appear. If I bought a tourtech cradle would this be a fix?

This is the second time round just returned a faulty garmin.

I will take pictures

It’s the drink that keeps me smiling!:) :)

Kev,
I'm waiting for my Touratech cradle to arrive before I use my rider, but two mates had the worn pin problem and got multiple repairs from Tomtom, then bought the Touratech cradle and their problems were solved.

I've seen the cradle lock the rider down solid so it can't move, but can't personally vouch as I haven't owned one (yet) myself.

You could ask Sk8mutie, he's got the experience of the rider and Touratech cradle, but you need to sponsor the site to send and receive a PM.

Tomtom cradle

Thanks Adam, I think I will do the same and order the touratech cradle. Although I am not sure I have room to fit it with all the rubber mounts, but I will worry about that when it arrives. Thanks for you feed back I don’t feel as bad about having bought the Tomtom now. I think it’s about time Tomtom acknowledged the problem and got it sorted. I E-mailed them yesterday expressing my concerns no reply as yet.

Thanks Kevan
