Had my bike in for it's 600 mile service and as often happens they have over filled it with oil :blast

Tilted it to the right and still no sign of an air gap at the top of the sight glass so decided to drain some oil off.

After 455ml finally had a gap at the top of the sight glass - is it really that hard for dealers to get it right :augie

If they can't get the engine oil level right it makes you wonder about how well they have done things like the final drive oil or valve clearances.:rob

Excuse my ignorance, but what's going to happen if it's overfilled with oil. I assume it better than under filling it? Also agree a main dealer should get it right in the first instance.

Better to underfill rather than overfill

An overfilled sump can cause resistance to the crankshaft and oil to slop into the cylinders and under the pistons. High oil levels can cause leaks past the cranshaft seals and onto the clutch. Excess oil can contaminate and destroy the catalytic converter and lambda sensor. Just to mention a few problems.

Too much pressure might blow dreaded clutch seal. More likely to blow into airbox and out of valves. I think. Had same problem myself and drained 200 ml.
Dont forcet to run your bike for atleast 10 mins after temp show 4 bars and put on centre stand while engine still running. Very easy to get false readin if oil not fully heated.

Agreed.:thumb2

Better too full than too empty in my book. Seals are cheaper than bearings bores and blocks.

However, That does seem a little too much though at ...what 1/2 litre?

Looks pretty dark as well for brand new oil. I know some of them have dyes added, but they're usually a pink-ish colour, not like dark treacle! Maybe they didn't fully drain the old oil out before adding the 'correct' quantity of new oil?

Or forgot to change the filter more likely.....would equate to the quantity overfilled.

Don't make gravy with it for Sunday's roast :-)

New bike needed...... I reckon

one of my infrequent visits to a dealer resulted in a shoe covered in engine oil because the rocker box hadn't been tightened up properly. Same dealer forgot to tighten MikeO's front wheel

i would check the filter if you can to see if it was changed and it my be best to drain all the oil out and put fresh in. as my oil looked the same black colour after i droped it out and put nice golden oil back in.

i found for the cost of the oil filter and oil and the hassel of getting to a proper BMW dealer its easyer to do it my self an less the bike is brand new.

sure the filter was changed and so not a problem.

The way the photo was taken I think - oil in site glass is very clear ;)

If I clean the jug the wife will never notice :D

......and yes new bike required but think it will wait a couple of year;)

Well glad I drained some oil out last night - went for a good 100 mile run round Staffs/Derbyshire this morning and checked the level again when I got back and still above top of sight glass :blast

Knowing that I now had an accurate reading in the sight glass I drained some more oil out - circa another 170ml (slightly more as I spilt some) to get it back to the top of the sight glass.

That means it was overfilled by circa 625ml :eek

It's not even as if I had paid for it as I had negotiated a free 600 mile service as part of the deal for the bike :D

Will drop by the dealers in the week and give them some constructive feedback ;)
