Hi, I have an 08 1200GS and want to get a tool kit together, I have most of the basic stuff but was wondering if there any special tools required for the removal of the front and rear wheels if so where best to get them.

Many Thanks

Can you access a manual for the bike?
Read the section regarding wheel removal, and work your way through it making notes of what you'll need for each stage described in the proceedure.

get a 16/17 mm box spanner

its real easy, I had this problem when I had to change tyres.
Go buy an old fashioned 16/17 mm box spanner about 15 cm long so that you can put it in your pocket or tool kit.
The 17 mm end goes straight INTO the front axle. Insert screw driver from tool kit and turn to release - works a treat and beats the hell out of the bodged up/welded on solutions !

Errrr... That's what the link says about the standard tool kit, right at the top (where most people start reading from):

(1) open-ended 17mm wrench (used w/spark plug & front axle sockets)

I made my own spanner for removing the front axle. I got a landrover wheel nut and welded a 1/4 inch socket to the nut to the wheel nut. Instant tool.

That's life in the outback for you.... Faced with 1,000 miles of dirt road to get to a shop and self-reliance has to take over.....
