Top end power loss

03 1150 and I am still (previously posted) spluttering at 4-5k rpm which makes the zoom zoom rather pathetic, top end speed is low but fuel use is high.

Thought it was water somewhere a few weeks ago but its not gone away (nor really got worse). I am now going to take a look at the plugs etc but as I have to work outside and have Wallys and guards fitted is there any quick way I can tell which side or plug might be causing the problem?

I have just run outside to see if Whattons suggestion (link below) for displaced throttle cable was the cause but bah! no luck . Thought you had 2 wins there for a minute!

Any other suggestions for potential causes?

Is it a twin spark model ? -

They have terrible problems with the plug caps , it has an inbuilt coil that gives up far to easily . Gives the sort of symptoms you describe

thanks Neil, Its a twin spark. Is this a replacement jobbie (for all 4?) or can it be tested? I did ask SPC to diagnose it some weeks ago but they couldn't detect a fault (probably didn 't go high enough on the revs to make it happen).

I think it soom may be a job for ........... STEPTOE.duna duna duna duna...

All four!!! aren't they about £60 each = £240

CW's diagnose it by running with one of the caps off in turn. if that's the problem, when you take the duff cap off it will run fine on the other plug.

might be an idea to ground the cap though as it could be bad for the ignition system otherwise.

I had this with my 1200 a couple of weekends ago...

I assumed it was the coils and took it to a dealer as it's still in warranty - and been serviced by them only a few weeks before...

Turned out to be a duff set of plugs! replaced all 4 and it's running fine! (not sure what they did to diagnose the fault as I was too busy reading a book and drinking coffee)

For the cost of a set of plugs it's an easy test, and if isn't the plugs you'll end up with a spare set!

test with new leads and it turned out to be the coils, bl__dy expensive but at least I am back to zoom - zoom, only a couple of weeks out of warranty - Huh

Amazin what a difference a fully firing cylinder makes on a twin!

Check the rubber caps on the throttle bodies - also check the O rings on the inlet tubes - between the airbox and the throttle bodies. Had a similar thing myself, replaced all of the above and the problem went away.

Errrmmm - the problem was found, as stated in the post previous to yours
