Had a little scare on my 1150GS single spark (w reg) Hit 90 MPH and it felt like i hit a govener or the back end locked. was wondering if my clutch was going or something or i just hit rev limits.

I am not a speedster generally and the first time I go over the NSP i cack me self.

A healthy 1150 will do well over 90 in 5th. I can't remember offhand how much as I don't make a habit of it, but I think closer to 120mph would be right.

If your clutch had gone the revs would increase further but the road speed would stay the same. How many revs were showing at 90mph?

If the back end had locked you'd have left a very long black line on the road and you'd probably be posting from a hospital bed.

Nice graph to look at.....

My 1150GS used to be able to hit the rev limiter in 5th, but I'd be doing upwards of 120mph when it did it. See my avatar...

Everry big trail bike I've ridden has it's issues with wobble at high speed.

Have you ridden an 1150GS on Tourances? I've never had a wobble from mine yet except operator error at very low speeds:nenau 58,000 miles some loaded with panniers and camping gear and others solo and no luggage. Utterly stable.

Something definitely wrong there.

I tend to ride my 1150 in and around the 90-"as fast as it goes" bracket a lot and never had any issues with any locking or "limiting". In fact the only thing was it popped out of 6th a couple of times

But then again i have never had any stability issues, even with top box and panniers fitted, spanking back down the A1 flat out with the missus on the back :augie

I probably need to qualify my comments about 'wobble', especially since I didn't understand what 'hitting a govener' meant.

The big vstrom can get front-end wobble at speed, my Super Tenere did it, so did my DR800. I'd always supposed it was being as wide as a barn door (both the bikes and myself) and having high windshields (I had a 650 Dville with a high shield that acted like a sail).

I've not yet had any jumpiness from the GS, but I've only had it since last September. The most stable highspeed bike I had was a blackbird with d/bubble screen. I had things like Bandit 1200s try to race me on that, while I was loaded and 2up. No chance.

Thanks for the info just gotta pluck up the courage to go back on her now to check what the fault is, is there a way to check the clutch like in a car with hand brake on 2nd gear and try to pull away or is it just a case of getting on and looking at revs compared to speed to see if revs go up with out speed increasing.

If i can describe the feeling a little better, I was doing just on 90 on a straight with the bike up right and she snatched from the back end it was very quick as if something had grabbed the back end i could not work out if it was the limiter comming in in an 1150 agricultural way or what I instantly looked down at the revs to see she was well up close to max but as I had cacked me self the speed was falling pretty quick with the revs

Waiting for the roads to warm up a little and I will go out for some gentle riding to see if I can source the fault (rider or bike)

fueling cutting out?
they slow down pretty quick when that happens?

check the wires running from the ignition switch too

90 in 5th is nowhere near the red line. 3rd maybe. I did 100+ in 4th on the Nurburgring last year.

If your revs were close to the red line I'd say your clutch was slipping.

are you sure you didnt just hit a bit of shit on the road and back end slipped?

Good point. Lost of muck on the roads now. It happens to me a lot but I've just got used to it - I live in the sticks so slippery stuff is normal for me.

Wheel spin at 90 does make you bum twitch a bit though.

I checked for you yesterday on my way into work purely for research purposes ................. 5th gear = 112 mph(ish) with about 300 hundred revs left to go before the red line starts and shifting to 6th :augie

Sounds like you slipped a gear from 6th to 5th.

Can be a feature.

Your description fits. You have probably not engaged 6th cleanly, which would hold under power, but any slight blip and the box jumps down to 5th.

At that point you would look down at the display see that you are in 5th gear but the revs would be high.

Mine suffered with this, on the standard 1150's the gap between 5th and 6th is big. It is fine when just 'snicking' from gear to gear, even clutchless from say 2nd to 5th but from 5th to 6th you need to take a little longer, just to make sure it is engaged.

Mine has the 6th gear "overdrive", so no gain at all over the 5th....;)

Tried the "launch" last year in Germany, going to Munich (Autobahn).

Same results in 5th gear top rev, as in 6th = 196 Km/h.

I have the big Adventure screen + TT Spoiler.

No problems with wobbling.
