Hi All

I have just tried removing the torx bolts on the rear foot peg holders, and I've managed to break a Halfords Expert 1/2 inch drive T40 socket. Or maybe the Halfords Expert sockets are shit, but I recently used them to put the rear shock bolts in with them and was able to tighten the bolts up to 100Nm..

The top part of the tapered socket broke off, fortunately no damage to the bolt was done. The standard torx sockets, while they fit ok, I think I need something better fitting for the bolts. Either that or someone has cemented them in the holes!!

Question - Do I need standard torx driver sockets or torx plus please?

Thanks

Id recommend a heat gun and gently apply heat to the bolt. I’ve snapped Halfords advanced gear before disassembling my old 1250. Luckily they have a lifetime warranty! :beerjug:

That my next step, a heat gun.. That's good to know as I have just looked and the the socket again and they are Halfords Advanced :giggle:

Let us know how you get on 👍🏻

I’m sure they use litres of loctite 😂

Who knew. Did exactly the same thing last September so bought a Lidl heat gun. Still to replace the silver passenger foot peg hangers with my new black ones but it will have to wait until I get a new torx bit!

Will do 👍

I agree about the Loctite!!

Other bonus, I have found my bank statement as proof of purchase for the socket too!! Off to Halfords tomorrow 😁

Lucky I only have to wait until tomorrow to pick up another Torx socket!!

And thankfully I already have a heat gun 😄

Have you not tried a hand held impact driver to shock it.As an aside, the 2 times I've taken 10mm spanners back to Halford(jaw opened)never been asked for a receipt, straight exchange without issue, good luck.

I broke a 45 torx and they replaced it immediately.

I work on the tools, most of my kit is Halfords professional, just take the broken tool in and they hand you another. Know guys who have more trouble replacing Snap-On.
I do think their Torx bits are not upto the standard of most of their kit.

They are blue loctite’d on to 25nm. If the torx bit is in square they just need a bit of sustained pressure to move, but they do grip for a good 10mm of the thread.
I’m looking for a set of rear foot peg hangers from a GSA in silver if anyone has a spare set.

Will definitely be Loctite on the threads.
Heat gun, get it good and hot and allow time for the heat to penetrate down the bolt. It’s a good idea to remove the seats first…

The bolts are thread locked. You need to heat it to about 80c to melt it.

Don't use a powered impact gun. It will do more damage and break more tools.

A manual impact driver really helps. The ones you smack with a hammer. They twist the bolt by about 12degrees whilst the impact bites the driver deep into the bolt head. They're used a lot in our trade.
