Am I the only person who lives in fear of stripping the head out of a torx screw?
Having just removed my rear wheel in the dark I found the 4.5 Torx fitted well in the socket, just a bit sloppy as they all seem to be. I had doubts so did not give much of a pull on the spanner, just as well because after locating the No5 tool I found this fits much better, still sloppy though.
120 years or so wheels have been held on with wheel nuts which fit proper spanners. So why have BMW fitted such a poor socket system? My R80ST and R1150R had wheel studs with hex heads (and a spanner in the tool kit) My R1200GS had the same but no tool kit, my car wheel brace fitted easily.
Some will say the torx has more driving edges so gets a better grip, perhaps they do on the small bodywork screws, but not on a hex head this size.

Torx works better for power tools which is why they use them. More points mean the tool will always be closer to fitting. It's a crappy deal but it works in the factory so saves time and ultimately money.

Hex head bolts will round off as well if you use the wrong size tool :blast
All my torx bits are all a very good fit when the correct size is used and never stripped a torx screw head, yet.
I use halfords professional torx bits.
Always worth seeing if the next size up fits.

The rear hub bolts are a T50 torx, Torx bits tend to flare out away from the 'point' ( they tend not to have parallel edges like a hex key) so you may find that a T45 will fit but it's not what is required. It kind of gives an easy to centre but fits better if you push it in further effect.:eyebrow
If you ground a few mm off the pointy end of the 45, you may find it fits better (but it's still not the right size)

Quite :)

When I first had the back wheel off my 1200 I put the studs back in with thread lock :blast. I sheared a Torx socket trying to undo them the next time I took the wheel off :blast :blast The profile in the bolt head was untouched :)

Why use thread lock, copper grease always used to be the stuff for wheel studs!
