Anyone no how I can dampen the drumming I get when the peak is fitted to my Tour-X.

I like the look with it fitted, it’s why I choose it so I don't particularly want to bin it although I have removed it for now.

Anyway any tips are well appreciated.

Ahh yes......that! As you've discovered it's caused by the peak vibrating. I taped the underside of mine with thick PVC tape....didn't work. I fitted screen edge trim to the leading edge of the peak....worked a bit. I rubber mounted the peak where it touches the helmet's shell.......didn't make a blind (deaf?) bit of difference.

I had however noticed that on the rare occasions when I forgot to wear my earplugs, the drumming didn't seem so bad. I then had a discussion with Cool Carbon who used to be a Green Leopard agent about the problem. He likened the problem to the noise that you sometimes get when walking while wearing foam earplugs. You know....the boing, boing, boing......noise that you get in your ears every time that your foot strikes the ground. He reckoned that the drumming was caused by mechanical transmission of the vibration from the peak through the bones of my skull causing the noise inside my ears.

That hypothesis made a lot of sense. I therefore decided to try some filtered ear plugs which would vent my ear drums rather than bunging up my ear canals with foam plugs. That's been the most successful solution to date. The wind noise isn't attenuated to the same degree as it would be with foam earplugs but the drumming is only just discernable. I don't know how bad it is for you but previously, at its worst, it was enough to vibrate my eyeballs and blur my vision.

Thanks Schtum, the drumming is bad enough to cause ringing for sometime after I get of the bike.

I'll have to try the filtered ear plugs route, do you know where I can order some?

Thanks again..

I bought the ones I'm using at the moment from Halfords.

Why do people continue to buy Tour X helmets, when everyone complians about the noise / buffetting / leaking ?

Or is this just a fashion statement that has to be followed in " I ride a GS, and I need an off road helmet" ?

Why not go and but a cheaper and ride with Oakleys ?

Abi,
as you are in P'boro ,you can go to Green Leopard in Corby to get your moulds done. I have a tour-x but don't get this problem, just the usual GS screen issues with buffeting in general.Good luck with sorting it.

That's the strange thing some people suffer from this and some don't. Boz reckoned his Tour X was the quietest helmet he'd owned. I wonder if it's something to do with the bone density of different people's skulls. If it is a mechanical transmission of vibration it might be linked to the resonant frequency of my bonce.....

Oi less of the everyone please

Mine makes less noise than my arai quantum F or my arai astro race, its a comfier fit, and apart from when doing lifesavers on the m-way or riding at 90+ I don't get buffetted, and the weekend before last I did 200 miles in p^ssing rain and it didn't leak at all......... I did get mine fitted by the arai expert at the local arai specialist................. so don't tar everyone with the same brush

Thanks for all replies, but don't any one fall out over the this issues.

Thanks again all.....

:)

Mine's the confiest lid of the three that I've got, and I just remove the peak for motorway days, and replace it for dawdling around back lanes against the sunset...

Have spoken to Arai about getting some new check pads, they say the helmet come with 25mm pads but can get 30 and 35mm pads.

They say the pads wont be in stock until July but I'm putting an order in for some larger ones too reduced the wipping effect at times when its a windy.

Also you can get replacement air vents so will get a new ones as a cracked mine after I bought it, these are about 10 pounds each!

Cheers

Speak to Arai about the vents, bet they do them under warranty, five years with all Arai helmets :thumb

I'm going to have send mine back to Phoenix. The lining is fraying. Now this might be because it's been rubbing on the collar of my jacket but I've not had any similar problems with my Arai Signet/e.

I'm not sure if they can replace the whole liner trim or if they'll have to change the whole helmet. I believe they've stopped marketing the Motard version of the Tour X.....

Thought you might want to read the email and reply I got back from Phoenix;

Subject: Tour-X Helmet

I'm getting a low pitch drumming which is very uncomfortable while wearing my Tour-X on my BMW R1200GS with the peak fitted, I do wear ear plugs but this only dampens the noise not the vibration from the peak.

Is there a way/mod I can dampen this with damping strips etc or a heavy duty peak that will not resonate so much. Apart from the noise I am very happy with the product but the only way I can wear it is with the peak removed (not why I bought it).

Dear Mr Shafi

Thank you for your contact regarding Arai helmets.

The Tour X helmet is a dual purpose helmet aimed at the supermoto type market and is based on the VX Pro motocross helmet with the addition of a visor option. The helmet is not designed to be used at high speed on the road with
the peak fitted - hence the option of visor with no peak.

Arai do not produce a "heavy duty peak"

I am sorry that I cannot be of assistance to you in this matter.
I have copied Arai Europe with your comments for reference.

Coz not every one has a problem with them, and if they do perhaps the pros outway the cons.
A bit like people complaining about problems with GS's.
Had mine for two and a half years and wouldn't wear anything else, hardly a fashion statement.

Unlike those flip up helmets as worn by aliens that did the TV advert for 'Smash' :P
