Anyone use Touratech case hooked up to a standard GS, using the standrd BMW hooks ???

Touratech don't recommend it, but I need to swap Touratech with normal GS cases.

Is it do-able ??

It certainly is do-able yes, I have seen it.

It's not as sturdy as the TT custom built rack of course, but if you have no good alternative and you don't go off-road too much with the TT panniers, I guess it's alright.

Cheers,
Michel

PS There currently is a set for sale here if I'm not mistaking

OK Cool. Yes, I'm going "off road", if you can call riding in Morocco off road.. I was just wondering if the bike starts shaking a lot of the cases fall off. Not worried if you fall. That's a different problem if they fall off then. Less of a hassle.

Hi Mike.

I've got some of the TT "Street" panniers that fix onto the BMW rails.

They are great for touring through Europe etc. But I've found riding over rocky roads, or when the going gets a bit rough the BMW plastic rails do tend to let the panniers shake around a bit especially if not quite full, as the rails tend to flex (unlike the metal pannier rails)

What I've found in these sort of situations if the mount that sits on the pillion footrest can jump off. The panniers won't fall off, but it is a bit disconcerting!

Although they are great for touring in the manner which most GSers perform, I probably wouldn't recommed them for off roading or desert riding.

The TT ali case are just the same as the frame mounted ones, they just have a different mounting arrangement.

Saying that, the "street panniers are really quick and easy to take on and off, and are lockable onto the (plastic) BMW pannier rails.

Hope this helps,

BBB

yeah Thanks BBB.

Guess I need to stick to the BMW rails. It's the only wise thing since I'll need to be able to swap both. Thanks for the input.

Why's that in fact Mike?

If you want lighter plastic panniers and TT boxes, you could consider the TT rack and a set of Pelican cases for example...

Just an idea... seen quite a few on advrider who did that, looks quite good imho.

Cheers,
Michel

'cause I already have the BMW cases....

Mike,

I reckon you'd be able to swap from BMW rails to TT 'Special Set' rails in about an hour or so (the only slight problem being you'd need to fit the supplied mini-indicators - but they'll work with BMW System cases anyway). With practice, you might get to do it quicker.

If you're going to need to use hardened cases of some sort for a long trip, I'd suggest this is a better solution than fitting hardened cases to fragile mounts (the mounts are generally the weak point in a drop).

Just my $0.02...

Mike:)

Street Version.

Hi Mike
I have used both types of street version and they are great
panniers.I have used the "ordinary street version" with the exhaust cut out and the set that works with the wudu exhaust lowering system both fine .They may not be as stable as the set with the standard tubular steel mounting system, but they are fine for normal touring. These clip onto the normal BMW pannier rail, and it would be difficult for them to come off,I used locktite on the wee nuts that hold them in place and they never moved an inch. They are also locked to the pannier rails.
I have not used them off road, but dont see a problem, the only problem that i could envisage is that they are not secured on the tublar steel rail the full way round the box if you know what i mean, that leaves them a bit flimsy at the rear corner.
I toured with them for three weeks ,with no problem. If you were to be travellin off road i dont think it would be a big deal to Bolster the BM pannier rail and insert a support at the rear.
I have attached pictures of both systems,if you need more clarification ,,just ask !.
By the way Both these systems are for sale.
You can just see the exhaust cut out on the left.

This is the wudu system
do not under estimate the heat eminates from your exhaust.
With this system there is absolutely no problem.

Thanks Mike. I'm 100% mechanically disabled !! When I tried swapping the windscreens on my 2 GSs, after 30 minutes of work, I ended up with 1 bolt missing (out of 2 x 4).

So it's out of the question for me to do anything myself except fill her up with gas & oil..:D

and the shop is 120 kms away...

Great. Thanks ! Since the ride is 3 weeks in that sandbx they call Morocco, but with no real off road riding, I anticipate only bad roads and sand roads, so from what I understand, this should do the trick.

The rest of the long rides are asphalt, so again no problem. For the times I go off road, I take everything off anyway.

I'll let you know if I'm interested in the panniers, but I'm not planning to lower the exhaust.

even i can take these off and put them on again.

One day I'll tell you the story of me putting paint in to an engine instead of oil. That'll show you what I can do and can't..
